The new building you have watched go up between Walmart and Good Will in Columbia has its new sign installed designating it the "Appliance Store" and is now open. The driveway will be paved as soon as weather permits and a grand opening will be held in mid-April.

Six jobs are accounted for in this business owned by the Don Franklin family, including service personnel, installation and maintenance staff.

Brands of appliances will include GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire. They will also sell Scag mowers and Stihl power equipment.

General Manager Tommy Steele is excited about the new technology in appliances today, a GE Cafe fridge that makes a cup of coffee in its door, for instance.

Helping run a hometown business comes naturally to Tommy, who along with his brother, grew up in their family business -- Kentucky Tie and Lumber. It was sold not long ago when their parents, Mom and Dad Sharon and Bill Steele, relocated to Frankfort where Bill is the State Director of The Division of Forestry in the Bevin administration. Seven grandchildren are keeping Sharon busy.

The Steele family and the Franklin family represent a long tradition of entrepreneurship in Adair County and are to be saluted for their dedication to helping make this a better place.

I believe we need to be continuously searching for ways to support local businesses. It's fine to recruit new jobs, but it is equally important to grow more jobs by supporting our existing businesses that are making families stronger, helping our children learn work ethic and service skills as they grow up in business.
