No. 5 LWC Volleyball defeats Campbellsville 3-1

LWC Volleyball has now won nine consecutive meetings with Tigers.
Next: Lindsey Wilson Volleyball hosts Bryan (TN) at 6pmCT, Friday, October 21, 2016, at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team took down rival Campbellsville (KY) in four sets on Thursday night winning 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-9) on the road at the Powell Athletic Center.

With the victory, the No. 5-ranked Blue Raiders (21-1, 9-1 Mid-South Conference) have now won nine-consecutive meetings with the Tigers (18-8, 7-3 MSC).

Lindsey Wilson did not trail in the opening two sets before the Tigers got in front early in the third and held on late to force a fourth set, just the fifth time all season the Blue Raiders have had to play more than three sets in a match.

It was all Lindsey Wilson in the final frame as the Blue Raiders won the final set 25-9, recording a season-high 14 blocks by the end of the night. LWC outhit the Tigers .364 to .109 on the evening.

Elly Burke went for a career-high 13 kills, the third time she's gone into double digits this year. Lauren Streets matched her with 13 kills and 12 digs, her second double-double as a Blue Raider. Eileen Acuna also went into double digit kills with 12.

Makenzie Montano had a double-double with 12 digs and a season-high 50 assists. Caitlyn Tino led the squad with 21 digs. Grace Blomstedt recorded a career-high eight blocks, the highest total in a match this season for any Blue Raider.

Lindsey Wilson pounced on the Tigers early, winning the first four points of the match en route to a 7-2 lead. Lindsey Wilson built its largest lead of the frame at 19-11 thanks to back-to-back blocks, including a solo block from Blomstedt. The teams evenly traded the next 12 points before the Blue Raiders captured the set on a block from Burke and Carolynne Silva, one of five blocks in the opening frame for LWC.

The Blue Raiders recorded a .464 attacking percentage in the set with just one error, while holding the Tigers to a .146 mark. The well-balanced Lindsey Wilson offense saw Burke, Acuna and Streets each record four kills in the first set win.

After the first six points of set two were evenly split, Lindsey Wilson rolled off four straight for the 7-3 lead. The Blue Raiders continued to create separation from there, collecting points in bunches before going ahead by double digits at 22-12. Burke finally delivered the killing blow when she smashed a ball down right through the center of the Tiger defense for the 25-17 second-set victory.

LWC turned in a .317 attacking percentage while holding the Tigers to a .186 mark. Burke and Streets each had another four kills while Acuna posted three in the set.

After not trailing at any point in the opening two sets, the Blue Raiders quickly found themselves behind 6-1 to the Tigers to start set three. Lindsey Wilson worked to climb all the way back and level things up at 13-13, but five quick points later Campbellsville was back out front 18-13.

Trailing 24-19, the Blue Raiders fought off four-straight set points to bring it to 24-23, but LWC was unable to level things up as Campbellsville stole the second set 25-23, despite being outhit .265 to .182.

Lindsey Wilson wasted little time to squash any momentum for the Tigers as the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 10-1 lead in set four, forcing Campbellsville to burn both timeouts in the process. LWC kept the pedal down and continued to hammer shots past the Tiger defense, winning the set 25-9 with 10 of Lindsey Wilson's final 13 points coming via kills.

The Blue Raiders again went above .400 with their hitting percentage, recording a .448 clip while limiting Campbellsville to a -.108 mark.

The Tigers were led by Annija Abolina, who finished with a game-high 19 kills.
