Adair Co. HS Football kicks off Fri 19 Aug 2016 at Taylor Co. HS New head coach Clay Stephens looks to continue recent success. First Game: Adair Co. High School Football Taylor County High School, 300 Ingram Avenue (campus address), Campbellsville, KY, at 7pmCT/8pmET, Friday, August 19, 2016, By Wes Feese Media Relations, Adair County Schools The Adair County High School football team will officially kick off its 2016 campaign in less than two weeks, and new head coach Clay Stephens hopes to build off last season’s record-breaking success. "I’m very fortunate to have been put in this situation, to walk into such a talented group across the board," Stephens says. "I’m very excited about the season starting—it can’t get here soon enough." After winning an unprecedented 10 games a year ago, the Tribe returns most of its offensive production from 2015. There are a few more holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball, but Stephens is optimistic that younger players are ready to step up and fill the void. He says several underclassmen have already showed marked improvement. "We had a great, great camp at Eastern Kentucky University,"" Stephens says. "The difference in post-camp Indians and pre-camp Indians is amazing." While the team adjusts to new roles on the field as the season begins, Stephens will adjust to a new role as well, on the sideline. After coaching last year at Warren Central, Stephens' first year at Adair County features expectations that would have been considered unrealistic just a few years ago. Former head coach Travis Gay's recent success--coupled with so many returning contributors from last year's squad--has fans clamoring for even more postseason triumphs. Stephens is up for the challenge. "I've wanted to be a high school football coach since I was 9 years old," Stephens says. "You're on the sideline under the Friday night lights and the smell of the grills from the parking lot and the band is playing--I just love everything about it." After a stellar high school career at Pulaski County that featured two all-state selections, Stephens walked on at Western Kentucky University in 2003 and eventually earned a scholarship, graduating in 2008. He says his various experiences--being a star running back in high school and a role-playing defensive back and special teamer in college--give him a unique perspective to share with his players. "It is important for everyone on the team to understand their roles," Stephens says. "Know what's expected of you, and then once you grasp that, start moving up the ladder. All of us are trying to get better every day." This story was posted on 2016-08-08 15:49:12
