LWC's International Student Program to expand Friends More than 100 students from 40 countries expected to enroll in Fall Click on headline for complete story By Travis Smith Columbia, KY - The international student programs is looking for area families to participate in LWC's International Friendship Program and serve as host families during the 2016-17 school year. The liberal arts college expects to enroll about 100 international students from more than 40 countries when the 2016-17 school year gets underway in mid-August. Sabine Eastham, Director of the International Student Program, stresses the importance of giving international students the best experience possible while at LWC and how that is achieved through the host families in the friendship program. "Host families do not house the students," said Eastham. "It usually involves having them to your house a few times a year for a meal or a special event and checking in on them periodically to make sure they are adjusting to American life." Jack Meagan of Northern Ireland attended LWC during the 2015-16 school year and was touched by the friendship program. "One thing I really loved about LWC was the host parent program they have in place for international students moving to Columbia," said Meagan. "My host parents got me out of some jams with airport runs, invited me into their family home for Thanksgiving, cooked me Sunday lunch on numerous occasions, took me on trips to local attractions and treated me like on of their own. I gained a true Kentuckian experience and cannot thank them enough for all they have done for me." Eastham pointed out that while the program helps international students in a new setting, it also enriches the lives of the host families as well. "By being a host family, you will be bringing another culture into your home. It opens your eyes to the wider world and you get to feel a sense of pride in sharing your traditions," said Eastham. An orientation class for host families is being offered on August 8 from 2-4 PM CT in the Jim and Helen Lee Fuguitte Science Center on the A.P. White Campus of Lindsey Wilson College.
