Josie Walker Diary from 1st - 1884 - Adair County Fair

Several years ago, we were fortunate enough to come across a couple of diaries from a young woman, Josephine "Josie" Walker, who lived in Adair County. The first diary spanned from 1883 -1884 and was purchased by the Kentucky Library & Museum at Western Kentucky University and Eddie and I were able to purchase the second diary which covered 1891-1893. Josie and her family (brothers and sisters named in the following excerpts include: Hugh, Bill, Ellen, and Sophie) lived and worked on a farm about three miles from the courthouse on Hwy. 61. - Tiffany & Eddie Kessler

By Tiffany Hadley Kessler

Excerpts from Josie Walker's Diary cover the first official Adair County fair in 1884 and a short piece on the county's fair in 1892.

1884

August 18, Monday - ...We cleaned around (the house) some and fixed food for tomorrow. This is to be the first fair ever held in old Adair County and the people are proud of it I guess.

August 19, Tuesday - A pretty day. Hugh, Bill, Ellen, and I went out to the fair. We took all our horses into the grounds and paid .40 apiece. It is just .25 on foot. The fair was splendid. There were a good many of nice things shown. Some very pretty quilts. The Willing Working Hand's carpet and yarn socks took the premium. The baby show was put off till another day. Everything out there is so nice. We took our dinner from home and eat it under the shade of a tree and everybody else most does that way too. Ma says she don't care about going to the fair.

August 20, Wednesday - I tried to get Sophie to go to the fair today, but she wants to wait till tomorrow. Hugh, Bill, and I went to the fair. There was the prettiest little mare colt I ever saw in my life shown and took the premium. The horses are all so pretty. Lola, Allen and Bill Pile all eat dinner with us on the fair grounds, they did not bring anything. Allen bought a water melon and we all eat it. They had a mule race in the evening which was amusing, the mules just flew around. The boy riders looked nice and rode well. Willie Winfrey took the premium as best boy rider. I saw a great many people that I knew and more that I did not know.

August 21, Thursday - It thundered and sprinkled some. Hugh, Bill, Sophie and Ellen went to the fair today. Ed took Sophie in the fair, that is paid her way. Ma and I were real busy all day. They say that things went off nicely. There does not seem to be any drinking around. Joe Buck Winfrey's wife was the only lady rider and of course got the premium.

August 22, Friday - Warm and cloudy. Bennie Flowers came by and left his horse here and walked to the fair. Hugh, Bill, Sophie and I went to the fair. Walter Tate took Sophie in so she got to go both days without it costing her a cent. Walter and Allen Pile treated us on lemonade and it was good. The baby show took place, there was only three babys shown - Lee Harvey's, Joe Rosenfield's and a Mr. Butler's. Lee Harvey's got the blue ribbon and Butler's got the red. Three men rode around the ring with a baby apiece in their arms. I was most sorry it was the last day. I enjoyed the fair very well. I promenaded a good deal with different ones and saw more people than I ever saw before. There was very good order kept.

1892

August 9, Tuesday - ...There will be a balloon ascension and parachute leap at the fair today and the next day.

August 10, Wednesday - ...Bill went to the fair today and saw the balloon rise. We have no good way to go to the fair, don't want to take the colt. Mr. Traylor has offered us the use of his farm wagon and team to use.

August 12, Friday - We all concluded not to go to the fair. Billie went to town and I went to Mr. Traylor's this eve. The balloon went up again this eve, and Billie saw it from town and I from Mr. Traylor's saw the man let go with the parachute and saw the balloon till it fell. Ellen is the only one of us children who has never seen a balloon.
