Scott, Decker and Roof earn MSC honors

Brianna Scott is named the Mid-South Conference Softball Champions of Character. Victoria Decker and Jacqueline Roof are named Pitcher and Player of the Year in the Mid-South Conference

By Richard RoBards, Jordan Alves

Campbellsville University's Brianna Scott was named the Mid-South Conference Softball Champion of Character, conference officials announced tonight at a banquet at Bowling Green Country Club.

"Brianna has proven what she can do on the softball diamond this year," said CU Director of Athletics, Rusty Hollingsworth. "To be selected by all the athletic directors in our conference for the Champion of Character award recipient speaks highly of her character and servant spirit away from softball."

The sophomore from Summersville, Ky. was nominated by her coach, Shannon Wathen. Scott has also been a champion on the diamond for the Lady Tigers, leading the team in doubles (15) and RBIs (56). She has 15 home runs and sports a .340 batting average and .762 slugging percentage.

Wathen submitted this as part of her nomination packet: "Since arriving on campus in 2014, Brianna Scott has made an immediate impact on Campbellsville University, especially among her fellow students and teammates while emphasizing her Christian values.

"Brianna has exemplified what it means to be a student/athlete and a Champion of Character through dedication to her church, family and the university. For the last six years she has been a part of Constructors for Christ, when, during a week each summer, she assists in the building of a church in a different city or state. While at the worksite, Bri helps with a variety of duties, including ductwork, insulation, roofing, electrical wiring and dry walling.

"She also has volunteered for the past five years teaching Vacation Bible School at the Aetna Grove Baptist Church. It is a weeklong program where she spends time teaching children about the gospel.

"Brianna has excelled academically, being named to the President's List in 2014 and 2015.

"This summer, she will be joining the Campbellsville University Athletic Department on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The trip will be a life-changing experience for her and the many people she encounters along the way. Through softball, a game that she loves, she will have the opportunity to touch numerous lives through fundamentals camps and prayer.

"I am extremely honored to write a letter of recommendation for Brianna. It is without a single doubt she embodies what it means to be a Christian first and a student/athlete second while embracing the five core character values of a Champion of Character. The impact she makes on our softball team is in direct correlation to how she lives her everyday life. She has a tremendous positive influence on the success of this team, both on and off the field.

"Our team is currently ranked No. 5 in the country with a 26-7 record. Being a student-athlete is a full-time job. To see her so engaged and making such a positive impact in other facets of her life is truly amazing and is a true testament to the outstanding person Brianna is ... a true Champion of Character."

Pitcher and Player of the Year

Campbellsville's Victoria Decker and Jacqueline Roof were voted as the Mid-South Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year, officials announced at the annual awards banquet tonight at Bowling Green Country Club.

Both Decker and Roof have put in the hard work and are now two of the best in the country at their craft. Last season, Decker earned the same honor - MSC Pitcher of the Year - while Roof was named the Freshman of the Year. The duo joins head coach Shannon Wathen and Brianna Scott as award winners tonight. Wathen picked up her seventh MSC Coach of the Year honor and Scott was named the softball Champions of Character (see separate stories).

Decker, a senior from Leitchfield, Ky., has a record of 24-4 which ranks her No. 1 in the conference and No. 5 in the NAIA. Her sub-one ERA of 0.92 is also tops in the Mid-South and No. 5 in the country.

Overall on the season, Decker ranks No. 9 in innings pitched (183.1) and opponents batting average (0.164). Her senior season saw multiple highlights but two came in one week. Decker tossed her first collegiate perfect game against Brescia on March 15 and then backed that up with a no-hitter against St. Catharine on March 22.

Also, she was the first Lady Tiger in history to eclipse the 500 strikeout mark for a career - which currently sits at 508.

Decker sits a top the program's career-record books in innings pitched (682), games started (106), opponents batting average, strikeouts (508) and wins (81). In a single-season, Decker is four wins away from breaking a 10-year old record set by Kelly Vooris in 2006 and her 0.92 ERA ranks her No. 3 behind Vooris' mark of 0.86 in 2006 and Angie Vaughn's 0.88 ERA in 2002.

Roof, a sophomore from Paducah, Ky., has put an exclamation point on her first two seasons at Campbellsville. After a freshman campaign of hitting .345, nine home runs and driving in 34 runs, Roof has backed that up by hitting .444 with 15 home runs and 43 RBI in the regular season. And she did that by missing the first eight games of the season with a shoulder injury.

Her 15 home runs from the leadoff position are tied for tops on the team with Bri Scott and also her 43 RBI rank No. 2 behind Scott. She is also a doubles machine - ranking her second behind Scott with 13. Her slugging percentage is through the "Roof" at .889.

Not only can she swing the bat, Roof also has one of the best gloves up the middle. Defensively, Roof has committed only 12 errors on 203 chances for a fielding percentage of .941.

After two seasons, Roof ranks No. 1 in Lady Tiger program history with a career batting average of .394 and slugging percentage of .726. She is seven doubles away from breaking the single-season record (20) and has smashed the single-season record with an on-base-percentage of .559.

The Lady Tigers also had nine student-athletes either earn First-Team or Second-Team All-MSC honors. In addition to Decker and Roof, Brianna Scott, Hailey Szpila, Shelby Ray and Neely Quint were named to the first team.

Scott is hitting .340 and leads the Lady Tigers with 56 RBI and is tied for first in home runs with Roof. Szpila started in 48 games at first base and hit .310 with five home runs and 37 RBI. Ray had a breakout senior year by hitting .307 and leading the team with 22 sac bunts. Lastly, Quint was one of the best pitchers in the Mid-South. She carries in an 18-3 record with a 2.30 ERA. In 136.2 innings, Quint has struck out 64 battes and opponents are hitting .256.

On the second team, CU had another trio - Rebecca Miller, Markie Smith and Madison Mudd.

Miller hit .396 on the season in 34 games but missed 16 contests due to a shoulder injury that plagued her throughout the middle of the year. Smith earned second-team honors after hitting .272 with six home runs and driving in 25 runs. To round out the Lady Tigers honors on the night was Mudd. A freshman from Louisville, Ky., started in 48 games for CU and took over centerfield. Mudd hit .302 with three home runs and 21 RBI.
