LWC Volleyball adds four student-athletes to 2016 roster

By Charlie Balcom

Lindsey Wilson volleyball head coach Andy Cavins announced the signing of four student-athletes for the upcoming 2016 season.

Eileen Acuna, Dunja Sobot and Lauren Streets are all transfer students while Elly Burke is the lone high school signee in the class.

Acuna is a 5-foot-11 outside hitter/defensive specialist from Tyler Junior College, a consistently top-five ranked program located in Tyler, Texas.

Originally from Risaralda, Colombia, Acuna is a former high school player of the year that helped lead Tyler to a 24-6 record in 2015, helping the Apaches advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV Tournament as the No. 1 seed in their division. She appeared in all 30 matches racking up 247 kills, 26 service aces, 487 digs and 46 blocks during her sophomore campaign.

She was a second team all-conference performer as a freshman at Tyler when the Apaches went 36-7 and has also spent time competing on the Colombian Junior National Team.

"Eileen has impeccable ball control and the ability to play multiple positions," Cavins said. "Her freshman year she served as both an outside and libero for the Apaches and this year she was their primary outside on a team that was ranked No. 1 in the country. Her experience at Tyler and internationally will enable her to dominate the Mid-South Conference and help us toward a national championship."

Sobot hails from Novi Sad, Serbia, and has spent the previous two seasons playing with Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

The six-foot tall outside hitter/right side appeared in 28 matches as a sophomore for the Mustangs, accumulating 253 kills, the second-most on the team, while averaging 2.48 kills per set. She also had 24 service aces, 335 digs and 38 blocks on the year.

"Dunja is an explosive pin hitter with arguably the strongest arm in our program," Cavins said. "Her ability to play either outside or right will enable us to utilize her in multiple scenarios. Dunja also brings extensive international experience which will serve her well in our conference. She was an all-conference and all-region performer at Western Wyoming and we expect that to continue at Lindsey Wilson."

Streets is a 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Dubuque, Iowa that played the last two seasons at Indian Hills Community College.

During her sophomore season at Indian Hills, Streets appeared in all 37 matches helping to lead the Warriors to a 32-5 record. She finished with 289 kills, 2.31 kills per set, 49 service aces, a team-high 362 digs and 46 blocks. She earned conference athlete of the week honors and was named an academic all-conference selection.

Prior to attending Western Wyoming, Streets was a three-time, first team all-conference performer at Hempstead High School and was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year as a senior and earned all-state honors.

"Lauren is a true six-rotation outside hitter. She has the ability to hit with power all over the floor as well as providing shutdown defense," Cavins said. "Lauren is one of the most competitive recruits we have encountered that will be able to assume a leadership role from the beginning. She helped Indian Hills to their most successful campaign this last season and we look forward to her bringing that intensity and success to Lindsey Wilson."

Burke comes in as the lone high school signee in the class, joining from the highly-decorated Mercy Academy in Louisville, Kentucky.

She helped lead Mercy to a 40-1 record as a junior, winning the Kentucky State Championship and earning the PrepVolleyball National Championship title. Burke then helped the Jaguars to a 33-8 record as a senior.

The six-foot tall right side has collected numerous awards playing for Mercy and her Union club team, including earning Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) All-American honors when she was 14, Most Valuable Player honors at the Wisconsin Dells College Showcase at 15, and earning All-Tournament Team honors at the President's Day Classic in St. Louis, Missouri at 16.

"Elly was our first recruit in this class and we expect her to provide an instant impact," Cavins said. "She comes from one of the best high school programs in the country, including a national championship in 2014. Her combination of physicality and ball control will provide us with a dominant presence on the right side for years to come. Her club team at Union is ranked in the top 15 nationally and we have no doubt that she will be ready both physically and mentally to compete every day."
