Senator Georgia Davis Powers to lie in state in Capitol Rotunda

Governor Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Thursday, February 4, 2016, through sundown Friday, February 5, 2016 in honor of Senator Powers

FRANKFORT, KY (3 Feb 2016) – Former Kentucky Senator Georgia Davis Powers will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, 700 Capital Avenue, Frankfort, KY, on Thursday, February 4, from 12:30pm-3pmCT/1:30pm-4pmET, followed by a funeral service and interment in Louisville on Friday, February 5, 2016.

Senator Powers was the first African American to be elected to the Kentucky Senate in 1967, where she served as the Senator from the 33rd District with distinction for 21 years.

"Senator Powers will long be remembered for breaking down barriers to advance the cause of civil rights here in the Commonwealth and across our nation,” said Governor Bevin. “She boldly fought discrimination and dedicated her life to making her community and state better for all citizens."



Senator Powers died on Saturday, January 30, 2016. She was 92.

Memorial Service in Capitol

The public is invited to visit the Capitol on Thursday, February 4, 2016, where Senator Powers will lie in state from 12:30pm-3pmCT/1:30pm-4pmET. A memorial service is scheduled for 1pmCT/2pmET.

Visitation and Funeral in Louisville

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at St. Stephen Church, 1018 South 15th Street, Louisville, KY 40210, from 5pmCT/6pmET until 8pmCT/9pmET. The funeral service will be held at 10amCT/11amET Friday, February 5, 2016, at St. Stephen Church, followed by a motorcade on the Georgia Davis Powers Freeway. A service of committal will be held in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, KY.
