News from Somerset Community College

SOMERSET, KY (1 Dec 2015) - Students in the Visual Communication Program at Somerset Community College (SCC) now have a new direct path to a bachelor's degree from Lindsey Wilson College.

SCC students who earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree through the Visual Communication program can receive advanced placement in Lindsey Wilson College's online User Experience (UX) Design bachelor degree program. The partnership allows students to complete the entire associate to bachelor's pathway through online courses.

"Several of our SCC Visual Communication graduates have continued their education at four year institutions," said Stuart Simpson, Visual Communication program coordinator. "What makes this partnership special is that, in most cases, Lindsey Wilson College will honor all student credits earned at SCC."

Lindsey Wilson College is a four-year liberal-arts college affiliated with the Kentucky Conference of The United Methodist Church. The college is located in Columbia, KY, about 20 miles from Lake Cumberland in South Central Kentucky.

According to Dr. Dennis Robinson, director of online education at Lindsey Wilson College, "We are very excited to work with Somerset Community College to provide their students with a bachelor's degree in User Experience Design. This degree is unique in our region and will prepare students for a career field that is in demand here at home and around the world."

All classes for the associate degree and bachelor degree are available completely online.

SCC's program offers students a full-range of technical classes with a focus on hands-on training. Instruction is provided in digital design and the computer software used for desktop publishing, illustration and digital photography.

"Since going online a few years ago, we've seen a steady increase in the number of students realizing the need and taking Visual Communication classes," Simpson said. "We believe even more students will be attracted to SCC's program as the result of this unique pathway to a bachelor's degree."

Even though all classes are online, Simpson said that the program promotes a personal touch.

"Our faculty make it a point to be available to our online students and offer personalized instruction through emails, individualized videos and discussion boards," he said. "Associate Professor Cindy Burton, of Somerset, our lead instructor, and Greg Kitzmiller, adjunct instructor from London, go above and beyond to make each student's experience a success."

According to Lindsey Wilson College's website, "User Experience (UX) Design is one of the fastest growing and most exciting segments in the interactive industry. UX professionals are in higher demand than ever as this field touches everything that humans interact with from medical devices to video games to jet cockpits. With the continued expansion of technology such as wearables, holographic interfaces, and the Internet of things, the demand for UX professionals will continue to grow in the foreseeable future."
