Art of Susan Striepe exhibit at Pence-Chowning gallery By Joan C. McKinney News from Campbellsville University CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Artist Susan Striepe of Nashville, TN will exhibit "Draw Back," a collection of sound-based artwork, at Campbellsville University's Pence-Chowning Art Gallery, 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, KY, through December 10, 2015. The exhibit is free and open to the public including her Artist Talk in the Art building on Monday, 16 Nov 2015 from 2pmCT/3pmET until 2:30pmCT/3:30pmET with a reception following from 2:30pmCT/3:30pmET to 4pmCT/5pmET. 
Gallery hours are based on student work-study availability as the gallery is part of the Art and Design Department hands-on learning experience. If the gallery is closed when you visit, please see a faculty member in the Art Building (white building behind the gallery), and they will help you when available.Although the works are fragile, they have a playful element that derives from the interaction of the viewer. Striepe (Photo, left) said, "All the works have the capacity to make some kind of sound, yet they are simultaneously spatially visual. The works open up the possibilities for us to consider what sound may look like." She is exploring the interrelationships between the art object, sound and the participatory experience of the viewer that allows for the possibility of unpredictable responses to the art. Striepe said in her artist statement, "In making these sculptures, my process incorporated intuitive responses to everyday materials, for example: roof flashing, funnels, hula-hoops and powdered graphite (powdered pencil lead). "Both the process and the participatory experience of the completed works open the artwork to the theoretical ideas of the roles that chance, accident, or the serendipitous may have contributed to making these works open-ended." Striepe was born in South Africa and immigrated to America in 1986. She has been a resident of Nashville since 1988. She has a B.A. in History of Art from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from Watkins College of Art and Design, an M.A. in Art Education from the University of Florida and is working on her M.F.A at Maryland Institute College of Art. She was a member of The Plowhaus Cooperative in East Nashville and exhibited with the group from 2006 to 2012 and on occasions with the Nashville Untitled group from 2002 to 2012. She volunteers as a docent at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville and teaches at Columbia State Community College. Campbellsville University is a widely acclaimed Kentucky-based Christian university with more than 3,500 students offering 63 undergraduate options, 17 master's degrees, five postgraduate areas and eight pre-professional programs.
