Transportation grants support student trips

By Molly Caldwell

Frankfort, KY - Students from 10 more Kentucky schools are taking field trips to a Kentucky State Park thanks to a transportation grant from the Kentucky State Parks Foundation.

The KSPF's "Inside Out Education" initiative allows schools to seek the grants that enable students to learn about the environment, history or culture at a Kentucky State Park.

"We're very pleased that more students are experiencing the outdoors at Kentucky State Parks with the help of these grants," Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker said. "It's important that the next generation of Kentuckians learn about their history and environment and the significance of our state parks."

The third round of grants went to 10 schools. The schools or districts and the park they are visiting are:
  • Flemingsburg Elementary, Fleming County, Fort Boonesborough State Park
  • Letcher Middle School, Letcher County, Carter Caves State Resort Park
  • Tygart Creek Elementary, Carter County, Carter Caves State Resort Park
  • Greenup County Area Technology, Greenup County, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park
  • Brookside Elementary, Jessamine County, Fort Boonesborough State Park
  • Southern Middle School, Fayette County, Fort Boonesborough State Park
  • Pleasure Ridge Park High School, Jefferson County, E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park
  • Calloway County Middle School, Calloway County, Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site
  • Whitney M. Young Elementary, Jefferson County, Pine Mountain State Resort Park
  • Red Cross Elementary, Barren County, My Old Kentucky Home State Park
"Our first grade team at Millcreek had one of the best experiences with this program. It significantly impacted our students' lives, and allowed them to experience something they might not otherwise have the chance to experience," said Ginny Burba, a teacher at Millcreek Elementary in Fayette County who visited Fort Boonesborough State Park. "Overall, it was the best field trip experiences I have had as a teacher, and I know an experience that our students will cherish."

These awards are from the Foundation's Educational Partnership committee's first review of Inside Out Education grant applications for the 2015-2016 school year. The next review will take place in early 2016; the deadline for submission is Feb. 1, 2016, and awards will be announced in early March.
