John T. Durham, Jr., 96, Wilmore, KY (1919-2015)

He was a member of the Greensburg Baptist Church and later, of the Palestine Baptist Church in Taylor County, KY. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service after a25 years and had worked for a number of years in tobacco markets. He served his country honorably for 3 years 6 months in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant, was a lifetime member of the Greensburg Rod Lowe Post 124 American Legion and served two years as Post Commander, and was also a lifetime member of the D.A.V. He was the widower of Mattie L. Sprowles Durham, his wife of over 58 years. He leaves four direct living descendant

John T. Durham, Jr. of Wilmore, Kentucky, formerly of Greensburg and Campbellsville, son of the late John T. Durham, Sr. and Florence Hoagland Durham, was born in Green County, Kentucky, May 17, 1919 and departed this life September 7, 2015, at Wilmore, Kentucky. He was 96 years old.

Visitation will be from 5pm-8pmET, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Ave, Campbellsville, KY. The funeral service will be held at 11amET, Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville, officiated by Rev. A. Landon Hadley and Dr. Richie Kessler. Burial will be in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens, with Full Military Honors by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

John T. Durham, Jr. of Wilmore, Kentucky, formerly of Greensburg and Campbellsville, was the son of the late John T. Durham, Sr. and Florence Hoagland Durham, was born in Green County, Kentucky, May 17, 1919 and departed this life September 7, 2015, at Wilmore, Jessamine County, Kentucky. He was 96 years, old, three months, and 21 days.

He professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Greensburg Baptist Church for 58 years and upon moving to Campbellsville, transferred his membership to Palestine Baptist Church.

Mr. Durham retired from the U.S. Postal Service November 14, 1980, having served 25 years 7 months as the Greensburg Post Master. He also worked a number of years on the Greensburg and Southern Kentucky Tobacco Markets.

He served his country honorably for 3 years 6 months in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant, was a lifetime member of the Greensburg Rod Lowe Post 124 American Legion and served two years as Post Commander, and was also a lifetime member of the D.A.V.

He united in marriage to Mattie L. Sprowles June 6, 1956. She preceded him in death November 5, 2014.

He is survived by:
  • One son and daughter-in-law: Jeff and Annella Durham of Lexington;
  • One grandson: Ryan Adams and wife, Katie of Nicholasville;
  • Two great-granddaughters: Elyse Adams and Lily Adams;
  • One niece: Linda Hall of Greensburg;
  • A number of great-nieces and nephews;
  • A host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister: Hobert L. Durham, Hardin K. Durham, and Lettie Durham Moore.
