Mike Watson: Comments on education in Adair County, KY

On buses and the band: "Bottom line is, we need both and they will come, perhaps not at the same time, but they will come. And, yes, I do pay taxes in Adair County; and, no, I don't have children in the school system; but I will cannot complain about the education I received in Adair County and I do not want to see a decline in the future." - Mike Watson

The band building, transportation of students and other subjects of late make me ponder. I was not in band, we lived too far from town and there were always chores at home to keep me busy, but I did and do appreciate the band and all the hard work they do, often with little thanks.

I can't play anything but the radio, but I enjoy hearing the band--Adair County's or any other. When I began working at Anderson County High in 1983 and students and faculty learned I was from Adair County, the usual was comment was, "Oh, they have a good band. We compete against them."

Adair County had a great band by that time, and still does, of course, and I took those comments to mean we had a superior band program, one that was envied.

Mrs. Watson and I didn't attend the Mark Twain band competition this year, but our friends from the Bluegrass did, as usual, and their comments were all complimentary - of the competition, the Adair County Band, the campus, and Columbia in general. Makes me proud.

Transportation is another issue. Buses are essential for the proper functioning of rural schools, no debate. The regulations are in place to maintain a safe, modern fleet that transports the future of America - our students - across the county and to many events state-wide. Adair County evidently has a good transportation director and fleet of buses or there would be flak from higher up.

I know this to be true as I have seen certain other counties on the hot seat in the past. Therefore, a modern, well-functioning bus garage is necessary. No argument. It has to be.

Bottom line is, we need both and they will come, perhaps not at the same time, but they will come. And, yes, I do pay taxes in Adair County; and, no, I don't have children in the school system; but I will cannot complain about the education I received in Adair County and I do not want to see a decline in the future.
