'Makings of a Master' exhibit goes to Burkesville, KY, 4 Jul 2015 Recommended by Sue Stivers Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Tom Musgrave News from Kentucky Arts Council FRANKFORT, KY - Storyteller Octavia Sexton of Rockcastle County and gospel musician John Edmonds of Warren County will usher in the Kentucky Arts Council's "Makings of a Master" exhibit when it arrives in Burkesville for the Independence Day weekend. Sexton, who is among the artists listed in the arts council's Performing Arts Directory, will perform at 2pmCT and Edmonds, who has retired from the directory, at 3pmCT, July 4, 2015 at the Burkesville Community and Veterans Center, 214 Upper River Street, in Burkesville. KY. The "Makings of a Master" exhibit explores relationships between Kentucky master traditional artists and their apprentices, with art forms ranging from banjo playing to Chinese dance, chair making, drum making and much more. This exhibit celebrates more than 20 years of apprenticeships funded and documented by the arts council. The exhibit will be on view through August 31. Sexton's storytelling includes personal experiences and humorous anecdotes based on her life. She attended a one-room grade school in eastern Kentucky, lived most of her formative years without television or the convenience of indoor plumbing, and had many experiences that range from the hilarious to the poignant. Edmonds is a gospel singer of national acclaim. He has performed with artists such as Della Reese, Ricky Skaggs, Clara Ward, James Cleveland, the Coasters, Stevie Wonder, Dottie Rambo and Rosie O'Donnell. His audiences have included presidents, European royalty and Hollywood celebrities. Following its stay in Burkesville, "Makings of a Master" will travel to Whitley City, where it will be on display Sept. 2-Oct. 31 at the McCreary County Public Library. The "Makings of a Master" exhibit is on loan from the arts council and contains seven display cases housing a variety of musical instruments, tools and artworks made by master tradition bearers. Interpretive panels display photos and quotes along with a push-button video display. For more information on the "Makings of a Master" exhibit, contact Mark Brown, arts council folk and traditional arts director, at mark.brown@ky.gov or 502-564-3757, ext. 495. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. This story was posted on 2015-07-01 19:51:41
