Letter to the Editor: National Foster Care Month

By Jennifer Moody
Personal commentary

This May, the Children's Bureau celebrates National Foster Care Month, recognizing and promoting the efforts to enhance the lives of children and youth in foster care. On May 3, 2015, Kentucky reported having all-time record high number of children living in out-of-home care. This is a time to come together on behalf of over 7,000 Kentucky children who are living in foster care because their own families are in crisis. This month provides the opportunity to thank the foster families who provide homes and love to children who need them, and to draw attention to the need for more families who can take on this challenge in our community.

It's important we recognize this month not only for the great things that foster parents are doing, but to inspire and engage more individuals to take action to support these children. Nearly every community is suffering from a shortage of foster families. Children in foster care feel more secure and are more likely to succeed when they are able to stay in their home community. The larger the pool of qualified foster parents in Adair County, the easier it is to ensure that children can remain in their own neighborhoods and schools.

The one thing all foster parents have in common is their commitment to children and adolescents. They understand the critical need our state is experiencing for dedicated, compassionate foster families.
