The apprenticeship program through the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center and Dr. Schneider Automotive systems is very exciting for Adair County High School and the community. As we are moving into the third year of the Race To The Top-District grant, the focus of college and career readiness is shifting to life ready skills. Job shadowing opportunities, apprenticeships, internships, and capstone projects are being looked at closely with hopes of expanding those opportunities to all of the Kid-Friendly districts participating in Race to the Top. Our work will center around matching kids with opportunities that fit with their long range plans as we move forward.

ACHS is looking to the future and understands that we may need to adapt to meet the demands of the changing job market so that our students can make informed career choices. Some exciting possibilities being considered include offering a dual credit 3-D printing class through Somerset Community College. Three-D printing is poised to grow considerably and has a wide range of applications in different areas, particularly in the health care field. We have discussed options for offering the online medical coding classes to our students as well.

A group of 75 students from ACHS recently visited the pre-engineering and 3-D printing program at Somerset Community College and were treated to a special day with Mr. Eric Wooldridge in the 3-D lab. Our students were able to create drawings which will be printed in 3-D and mailed back to them at ACHS. I was even scanned on a recent visit and they printed out my selfie in 3-D. Our students were one of the first groups to preview the new drone technology that Mr. Wooldridge is exploring.
