LWC Wrestling goes 2-1 opening day, NWCA NAIA National Duels Blue Raiders defeat No. 10 Missouri Valley, No. 15 Baker; fall to No. 1 Grand View Click on headline for complete story By Charles Balcom News from Lindsey Wilson College FORT WAYNE, IN- The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team went 2-1 in the opening day at the National Wrestling Coaches Association NAIA National Duals held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 4000 Parnell Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 46805. The Blue Raiders are still alive in the double-elimination tournament and face No. 6 Indiana Tech in a win-or-go-home match on Saturday at 8amCT/9amET. Lindsey Wilson began the competition by upsetting No. 10 Missouri Valley by a 27-18 margin in their opening dual of the day. The back-and-forth match saw Lindsey Wilson fall behind early after Chad Lampe was pinned by Dennis Welch (ranked No. 11 at 125 pounds) to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead. But the Blue Raiders battled back and after Keaton Thomas (No. 10 at 133) earned a 9-5 decision victory over Ryan Steams, Lindsey Wilson was awarded six more points after a forfeit at 141 pounds by Missouri Valley to take a 9-6 lead. The Vikings retook the lead after Jake Ekster (No. 2 at 149) pinned Isaac Thomas for a 12-9 advantage. But once again the lead changed hands as Joe Cozart (No. 1 at 157) recorded a pin over Andrew Simmons (No. 16 at 157) to give the Blue Raiders a 15-12 advantage. Missouri Valley's Nico Martinez was able to squeak out a 9-7 decision win over Court Mace at 165 pounds to tie the match at 15-15 with four weight classes still to compete. The Blue Raider grapplers came through when it mattered most and rolled off three-straight wins to secure the opening-round victory. Erick Gomez (No. 7 at 174 pounds) won via a 5-1 decision over Jared Sterling to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 18-15. Michael Pixley then recorded the second Blue Raider pin of the day as he took down James Smith in just one minute and 27 seconds to add six more points and take a 24-15 lead with two matches remaining. At the pivotal 197-pound match, Jake Maupin was able to hold on for a 5-4 decision victory over Justin Whitten, mathematically securing the victory by leading 27-15 with one match to go. Ameer Daniels fell in the 285 weight class to Gabi Musallam (No. 1 at 285) to add three points to the Vikings' total, but Lindsey Wilson had secured the first-round win 27-18. The second-round matchup saw the Blue Raiders pitted against three-time defending NAIA National Champion and top-ranked powerhouse Grand View (Iowa). Lindsey Wilson found itself in a big hole right out of the gate as the Vikings won the first four matches to build a 15-0 lead. Lampe suffered a pin by defending national champion Ryan Finch (No. 1 at 125) and Jacob Colon took down Felix Casa del Valle by a 7-3 mark at 133 pounds. Grand View's other defending national champion Brandon Wright (No. 1 at 141 pounds) then defeated Daniel Leonard (No. 16 at 141) 9-2, followed by Gustavo Martinez (No. 1 at 149) taking down Isaac Thomas with a 5-2 decision for the 15-0 Viking lead. The Blue Raiders were able to get on the scoreboard when defending national champion Cozart took down Grant Henderson (No. 5 at 157) with a 3-1 decision to cut the lead to 15-3. But the Vikings were back at it in the next two matches as Jimmie Schuessler (No. 2 at 165) pinned Mace and Thomas Moman (No. 4 at 174) held on for a 3-2 victory over Gomez to give Grand View a commanding 24-3 lead with three matches remaining. The Blue Raiders doubled their score at 184 pounds after Pixley upset top-ranked Christian Mays by a 3-2 margin, but the Vikings secured the next two matches as Derrick Hawkins (No. 7 at 197) defeated Maupin with a 13-5 major decision and Daniels fell to Dean Broghammer (No. 7 at 285) 5-2 to give Grand View the 31-6 victory, knocking Lindsey Wilson down into the elimination bracket. Facing their first win-or-go-home dual match of the tournament, the Blue Raiders found themselves taking on No. 15 Baker (KS).
