Civics classes in action: We're still teaching students to VOTE

Students at ACHS held mock elections to experience democratic process first hand

By Alan W. Reed, Superintenden
Adair County School District

Throughout our school experience we have all learned the importance of voting. As in yesteryear, students continue to learn that, in the US, we have a constitutional republic in which government consists of elected public officials who do not control us, but who represent us in a government " of the people, by the people and for the people."

President Thomas Jefferson reminded us that an informed and educated electorate is a fundamental necessity for the longevity of the republic. This year as in years past, mock elections were conducted in school so that students could experience the democratic process first-hand. Students were again reminded voting is a civic duty -and that democracy's cornerstone is information and education.

I am sure that educators like legendary LWC historian Miss Noma Dix Winston, or ACHS' famed Mr. John Peck inspired many of you to become knowledgeable voters. I would like to join them in remind each Adair countian to get out today and VOTE. I would also leave with you a comment of Jefferson, taken slightly out of context:

"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves." - Thomas Jefferson
