News from Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, KY - Area children and their family members are invited to the 21st-annual Lindsey Wilson College "Safe Halloween." The annual trick-or-treat event for area children will begin in the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 299 Williams Street, Columbia, KY, with other stops during the 6pm-8pmCT October 28, 2014 tour. The event, which is sponsored by the LWC Office of Residence Life, is free and open to the public.

LWC students will escort children and their family members from the Holloway Health & Wellness Center through four residence halls. Tours will begin around every five minutes. Children will receive store-bought, packaged candy from student residents, many of whom will be dressed in costumes. The tour will take less than an hour.

The four residence halls to be featured in this year's "Safe Halloween" are: Jerry and Kendrick McCandless Hall, which will be decorated in themes inspired by the films Frozen, The Lego Movie and Tangled; Phillips Hall, which will be decorated in themes inspired by the children's stories the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland and the films Tarzan and The Lion King; Keefe Hall, which will be decorated based on the themes of outer space, the stories of Dr. Suess and the cartoon character Garfield; and Horton Complex, which will include a haunted section.

The tour will end at the Campus Quadrangle where, weather-permitting, a children's carnival will be held. The carnival will include games, activities and pictures with LWC mascot Blue Raider Bob.

"Lindsey Wilson's 'Safe Halloween' is a way for the college to engage the community and invite community members to campus," said LWC Director of Residence Life Michael Burgan. "It's also a great way for kids to get a bunch of candy and enjoy the fellowship."

Last year's "Safe Halloween" drew a record number of participants as more than 950 area children collected candy from LWC students. Burgan said he hopes the 21st edition of the event will top 1,000.

"It's going to be a great time for everyone to get together, fellowship and eat some candy," Burgan said. "It's also a time for our students to dress up, get away from their academic work for a night and support the community by working with the area's kids. ... Seeing the smiles on the children's faces when they finish the tour tells it all."

Lindsey Wilson College's 21st-annual "Safe Halloween" will be from 6pm-8pmCT on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. The tour begins in the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 299 Williams Street. Contact: LWC Director of Residence Life Michael Burgan at burganm@lindsey.edu or 270-384-8521.
