Tired of higher gasoline prices here: She buys out of town

Personal Commentary: Writer advocates a Somerset Solution, with municipal ownership, management of gas outlet and drives out of town to buy.
(We buy locally from Lynn's Service Center, who's operating a landmark, historic business, is a good neighbor, and I remember Sue Stivers' words, 'I continue to work so I'll be able to have someone else pump my gas.' At Lynn's a thriving last-of-a-kind business, they not only pump my gas, they wash the windshield, check the oil, give asked for advice, come pick up my vehicle when it breaks down, and bring a battery when mine is dead - so I'll stick with him for the pennies more I might pay on the gallon. His prices are dictated by suppliers - and that is an issue. But Heidi's point may appeal to others, more. -EW)

Personal Commentary

Somerset recently started to buy gas directly from the refinery and cutting out the middle man. The town built their own 40,000 gal storage facility with 10 pumps for not only city vehicles, but residents as well.

As a result, local merchants have dropped the price of gas significantly.

My trip to Somerset on Thursday, 7/31/14, regular gas was $3.299, Russell Springs was $3.459 and Columbia was $3.559.

Why can't Columbia do what Somerset did?

We have some of the highest gas prices around!

You know that it's going up every holiday and every weekend.

One station raises their prices and all the other stations follow suit. I, for one, am tired of paying the Columbia high price for gas.

I fill up whenever I go out of down just to avoid the high prices here.

Why can't we do something?

Maybe if everyone starts calling our councilman or Ann Melton we can get some action?! How about it folks? Start calling! --Heidi Caron
