COLUMBIA, KY- TheatreFest! at Lindsey Wilson College will conclude its 2014 season with a production of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music this weekend. The production opens at 7pmCT Friday, July 11, in V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY It will also be performed at 7pmCT Saturday, July 12, and then at 7pmCT July 17, 18, & 19, 2014.

The TheatreFest! production stars Columbia residents Eric Peterson and Maggie Coleman. Peterson plays Capt. Georg von Trapp, who is torn between duty to his native Austria and his conscience. Coleman plays postulant Maria Rainer, who is torn between her vocation as a nun and an unexpected love for von Trapp. Elise Keiffer of Burkesville, KY plays von Trapp's love interest, Elsa Schraeder, and Brent Thompson of Columbia, KY plays the Max Detweiler, a music promoter who tries to negotiate a changing Austrian society on the eve of World War II.

The Sound of Music was the result of the collaboration of four giants of the American musical theater: music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by the writing team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse Basis. The story is based on Maria von Trapp's autobiography, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Since the musical premiered on Broadway in 1959, it has been considered one of the great American musicals.

The production is directed by LWC Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock.

This is the first time Brock, who has been involved in professional theater for three decades, has produced The Sound of Music.

"It's a story that a lot of people have seen as a film, but not everyone is familiar with the stage production, which is slightly different from the film that was produced in 1965," Brock said. "I wanted to produce this show because it's not just a wonderful story, but also because it's a story that so many people can relate to on so many levels."
