LWC Women's Basketball adds 5 student-athletes for 2014-15 Three transfer and two high school student-athletes join the Blue Raiders next year: Courtney Sandlin, Michelle Montgomery, Alexus Chinn, Ashley Johnson and Hannah DeBruin Click on headline for complete story By Charlie Balcom COLUMBIA, KY- The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball program added five student-athletes for the upcoming 2014-15 season, head coach John B. Wethington announced on Monday, June 9, 2014. "This group is really going to mix well with the student-athletes that saw a lot of minutes this past year," Wethington said. "We are adding two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior to an already relatively young team." Joining Lindsey Wilson in the class is Courtney Sandlin, Michelle Montgomery, Alexus Chinn, Ashley Johnson and Hannah DeBruin. Sandlin, Montgomery and Chinn are all transfer student-athletes while Johnson and DeBruin are high school signees. Courtney Sandlin Sandlin joins Lindsey Wilson after playing a year at Bellarmine (KY) University. The 6-foot-1 forward appeared in eight games as a freshman at Bellermine. She scored a career-high nine points in a game against Trevecca Nazarene (TN) University on Dec. 21, 2013. The Williamstown, KY, native attended Walton-Verona High School where she averaged 15.0 points per game as a senior. She was named to the All-Region Team and earned honorable mention all-state honors her final season. Sandlin amassed over 1,700 points and 1,000 rebounds during her high school career and led Walton-Verona to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances as a sophomore and junior. Michelle Montgomery Montgomery joins the Blue Raiders after playing a season at Columbus State (Ga.) University. The 6-foot-3 center saw playing time in 18 games during her freshman season. The Elizabethtown, KY, native attended John Hardin High School where she averaged 14.2 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game and shot 53 percent from the field her senior season. She compiled over 1,000 points and rebounds in her career and holds the school record for most points scored in a single game. Montgomery was named to the All-Area and All-Region teams. Alexus Chinn Chinn comes to Lindsey Wilson from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (Ohio). The 5-foot-9 forward played in all 33 games her sophomore season at Cincinnati State. She averaged 8.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game while leading the team to the Quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Championships. She recorded season highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds during her sophomore campaign. Chinn, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Princeton High School where she helped lead the team to back-to-back Greater Miami Conference outright championships in 2010 and 2011. As a junior, she helped Princeton win a school-record 23 consecutive games. She concluded her playing career averaging nearly 10.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field. Ashley Johnson Johnson hails from Nabb, IN, where she attended New Washington High School. The 5-foot-7 guard averaged 15.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game while shooting 77 percent from the free-throw line her senior season. She scored over 1,000 points in her career at New Washington becoming just the eighth player in program history to do so. Johnson was named the Southern Athletic Conference Player of the Year twice and earned all-conference, all-district and all-area honors. She earned Hoosier Basketball Magazine Second Team All-State honors and was named the Sectional 62 Most Valuable Player twice. Hannah DeBruin DeBruin is a 5-foot-9 forward from Athens, Ohio. She averaged 12.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 58 percent from the field her senior season at Athens High School. DeBruin recorded six double-doubles and ranks sixth all-time in total rebounds in school history. DeBruin helped Athens to a pair of District II championships and is an Associated Press All-District Division II Second Team selection as well as a Girls Basketball Ohio Division All-Conference team member. "Everyone in this class is very athletic and versatile. They can fit in more than one position and play both in the paint and out on the perimeter," Wethington said. "The athleticism we are bringing in combined with what we already have will allow us to do more like extend the floor and press more." - Charles Balcom, Lindsey Wilson College This story was posted on 2014-06-09 10:17:11
