LWC Women's Basketball season ends with 69-65 tournament loss

Fifth-seeded Lindsey Wilson Women's Basketball falls to fourth-seeded Shawnee State 69-65. Blue Raiders had a chance late, but a pair of Shawnee State free throws with two seconds left sealed the game

LEBANON, TN - The fifth-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team fell to fourth-seeded and ranked No. 25 Shawnee State (Ohio) 69-65 in the Quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament presented by GoJohnnyGo 5K/10K Run/Walk on Friday night, March 7, 2014.



Lindsey Wilson was led by Chanel Roberts who finished with a 22 point, 11 rebound double-double. Cassidy Martin added 12 points on four made three-point field goals. Jamie Cummings finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

It was a back and forth game as the teams exchanged leads right out of the gate. A layup by Cummings gave Lindsey Wilson a 6-4 lead at the 16:59 mark, the last time the Blue Raiders would hold the lead in the first half.

Shawnee State went on a 6-0 run before Martin hit a three to bring the Blue Raiders within one at 10-9, but another quick 6-0 run by the Bears expanded their lead to 16-9 at the 12:49 mark. Shawnee State used a 10-5 run to increase their lead to 12 at 26-14, their largest lead of the first half.

Lindsey Wilson would slowly begin cutting into that lead, getting it down to five after a basket by Cummings with 3:55 to play in the first half. A free throw by Cummings at the 2:37 mark made it 32-25. Both teams were plagued with turnovers and missed shots in the final two minutes of the half as the game went to the break with the Bears still leading 32-25.

The Blue Raiders shot just 26.5 percent from the field in the first half and were just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Bears shot 30.8 percent and made just 2-of-9 shots from three-point range. Shawnee State dominated the glass grabbing 34 rebounds compared to Lindsey Wilson's 23. The Bears were able to convert six Blue Raider turnovers into nine points while Lindsey Wilson failed to score on Shawnee State's five turnovers.

Lindsey Wilson began the climb back into the game to open the second half, using an 11-4 run to tie the game 36-36 on a jumper by Roberts at the 16:25 mark. The Blue Raiders took their first lead of the second half at 40-38 on a basket by Bre Elder with 13:37 to play.

The Bears quickly took the lead back and saw it swell to seven points at the 52-45 mark with 8:45 to play. Lindsey Wilson continued to battle as they used a 9-2 run to tie the game at 54-54 on a three pointer by Keosha Wisener.

A pair of turnovers and missed shots by the Blue Raiders allowed the Bears to build a 66-58 lead with 1:14 to play. A pair of late three pointers by Kayla Richardson and Tara Arnold helped cut the lead to two points with five seconds to play. Lindsey Wilson was forced to foul and sent Shawnee State's Abby Feuchter to the line where she made both free throws to seal the 69-65 win for the Bears.

Both teams finished the game shooting 35.8 percent from the field. Lindsey Wilson hit 29.2 percent from three compared to 18.2 percent by the Bears. Shawnee State held a 54-42 rebounding advantage and scored 19 points from the charity stripe compared to 10 points for the Blue Raiders.

The Bears were led by Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Alannah Sheets with 19 points in the win. Diane Abbady recorded a 14 point, 13 rebound double-double while Priscilla Santos finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson ends their season at 19-12 and a 9-9 conference mark. - Charles Balcom
