This month our district spotlight shines on a wonderful educator by the name of John Shelley. For those who may not know Mr. Shelley, aka John; he is one of the smartest, most hard working, humblest, kindest gentleman you will ever meet.

In the summer of 2013 after 22 years in the classroom Mr. Shelley accepted a position at Adair County Board of Education as the Title I Director, Principal of Adair County Youth Development Center, Principal at Spectrum, District Site Base Coordinator, and Energy Coordinator. It makes me tired just typing it all. . .but to no one's surprise, John has exceeded expectations.

Originally from Spencer County, Kentucky

Mr. Shelley is originally from Spencer County Kentucky where he graduated high school in 1987. John's hard work and dedication was recognized and rewarded when he received an Academic Scholarship to the University of Kentucky. While studying at UK he received the prestigious Sally Pence Award in Secondary Mathematic Education. John received his bachelors degree in Secondary Math Education at the University of Kentucky in 1992.

First teaching job, as math teadher, at Scott County Middle School

After graduating from UK, John started his career teaching pre-algebra and algebra at Scott County Middle School. The district moved him to Scott County High School in 1994 to teach Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and AP Calculus. From 1993 to 1997 John also was the SCHS assistant Boys Basketball Coach and was honored to help coach in two boys state tournaments. As if John was not busy enough during his tenure at SCHS, he completed his Masters in Secondary Math Education from Georgetown College in the spring of 1998.

Earned Masters in 1998

In the fall of 1998, after receiving his Masters, Mr. Shelley came to Adair County High School to teach math. During the past 16 years in the classroom Mr. Shelley has taught Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, transitional math, and AP Calculus. From 1998 until 2001 John was the head Boys Basketball Coach at ACHS and then transitioned to the head Boys Basketball coach for the Adair County Middle School from 2007 to 2010. It should also be noted that Mr. Shelley has worked off and on throughout the years with ACMS and ACHS Baseball and in 2010 Mr. Shelley returned to coaching as full time assistant coach for ACHS baseball and continues in that position still today. Oh yes, I almost forgot during all of Mr. Shelley's free time here in the district he continued to further his education and in 2006 received his Rank 1 from Eastern Kentucky University in Administration. Once again, it makes me tired just typing it!

Fortunately for Adair County is home of his families: The Shelleys and Ballous

Now you might ask how did Adair County get lucky enough to snag such a hard working, dedicated educator and coach as John Shelley; well, John's parents Marla and JM Shelley are both graduates of Adair County High School. And after retiring they, too, have returned to Columbia to enjoy their son and his wonderful family.

His family is his pride

Which brings us to one of John's favorite subjects his family. John swells with pride when he starts talking about his son, Marshall Shelley who is a senior at Adair County High School and plays both Basketball and Baseball; his stepdaughter, Whitney Maurath who is a junior at Lindsey Wilson College and is majoring in Human Services and Counseling ; or his stepson Derek Maurath who works for Southern Kentucky RECC as a lineman. He is quick to tell you what great kids they are and how grateful he is have them in his life. Of course he never leaves out his beautiful wife Jamie who has been a dedicated teacher here in the Adair County School District for 24 years herself and is currently teaching Science at Adair County Elementary School.

Now he's in the important role of Title I Director in Adair Co. District

When I asked Mr. Shelley about his new position and the transition from classroom to board room he had this to say: "Adair County and the Adair County School System has been very good to me. The Adair County High School was a great place to work. Both the faculty and student body made it a pleasure to come to work every day. Yet, I am very excited about my new position and all the challenges it brings with it. Title I is a very complex grant and there are a lot of strict guidelines to be followed. I am really lucky to have had a good teacher in Mike Akin to help prepare me for the challenge. Mike knows the program inside and out. You know, I sincerely hope I have had a positive impact on the children here in the county through my coaching, and teaching. But, now with my new role as an administrator, I look forward to working with students, teachers, and colleagues to continually improve our school system and county."

It is plain to see John loves this district and has always given 110 percent to our children. There is no question in my mind John Shelley will now give 110 percent to his new position and I for one cannot wait to see all the wonderful changes he helps to create for our students in his role as an administrator in the coming years. - Shamarie Claiborne
