COLUMBIA, KY - More than 130 "amazing" area veterans and their guests were honored Tuesday at the 11th-annual Lindsey Wilson College Veterans Appreciation Luncheon.

"What you've done for this country is amazing, and I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart," keynote speaker Richard Powers of Elizabethtown, KY, told a total of 132 guests in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.

The event, which is sponsored by the LWC National Alumni Association, included the unveiling of a tribute to local Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer.

A retired Army sergeant, Powers has created sculptures that honor a dozen Medal of Honor recipients. His latest tribute is to Meyer, a U.S. Marine who received the Medal of Honor in 2011.

"When I decided to build one for Dakota Meyer, first thing that jumped into my mind was that you guys, the World War II generation, are the greatest generation without a doubt," Powers said. "But Dakota Meyer is a hero of my generation. And I need to make sure that my generation recognized what he did and what the other recipients did. Because of what they did is a part of what we all did. As long as I keep this message going, they'll know about you."

Powers unveiled the tribute with Meyer's grandfather, Dwight Meyer, who served in the U.S. Marines Corps in the 1950s.

"You all don't know how proud we are of my grandson," Meyer told the crowd. "He went through a lot, but he's the same old Dakota. He hasn't let any of this get to him. He's just the same Dakota he's always been."

Powers' tribute to Meyer will soon be on display in the Cranmer Dining & Conference Center atrium. The writer, Duane Bonifer, is Director of Public Relations at Lindsey Wilson College Powers website: MedalofHonorTributes.com
