By Chris Megginson, CU Sports Information Director

CARACAS, Venezuela - Former Mid-South Conference Player of the Year and NAIA All-American Nestor Colmenares has been named to the Venezuelan National Team in preparation for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Colmenares, who became a member of Campbellsville University's 1,000 Points Club in 2007-08 and 2009-10, is one of 17 players to make the final roster.

The Venezuelans are currently in Tampa, FL, to prepare for the upcoming FIBA Americas Championships, which will be played from August 30 to September 11 in Caracas. The national team will first travel to Spain on August 1 to complete in six games against Senegal, Angola and Ivory Coast before return to Venezuela August 16 for two games against Brazil on August 18-19. Before returning to Spain, the Venezuelans will play Mexico, Jamaica and Uruguay August 24-26.

Colmenares is one of three players from the Cocodrilos de Caracas (Caracas Crocodiles), which won the Venezuela Professional Basketball League (LPB) on July 16, 2013. Colmenares averaged 10 points and 7.2 rebounds per game through 62 games of the 2013 season while starting at power forward for the Crocodiles. Caracas defeated nine-time champions Marinos de Anzoategui, 63-61, in Game 7 of the championship series to win the national title.

Colmenares, 25, was also named to the Venezuela National Team roster in 2011 and 2012, playing in the 2011 FIBA Americas Championships. Venezuela has medaled only once at the FIBA Americas Championships, claiming Silver to the USA "Dream Team" in 1992.

While at Campbellsville, Colmenares averaged 15.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and had 32 blocks during his 2009-10 senior season. He was a two-time NAIA All-American, being named to the Second Team after helping Campbellsville to the national semifinals in 2007-08 and was the first CU player to earn First Team All-America honors in 2010 since 2002. He finished his two-year career with 1,095 points. - Chris Megginson
