Assumption's Friedrich signs with LWC's Women's Basketball

There's nothing I didn't like about Lindsey Wilson, I like the school, the coaches and just the environment. It felt like home. - KATIE FRIEDRICH

By Dan White

COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson women's basketball coach John B. Wethington added another Kentucky standout to his 2013 recruiting class on Wednesday, signing Assumption forward Katie Friedrich to an NAIA scholarship in a ceremony at the high school in Louisville, KY.

Friedrich, who also plays AAU basketball for Team Ohio, is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds for the 17-7 Rockets this season.

As a junior, Friedrich earned All-26th District honors and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Daytona Beach Invitational. Last summer, Friedrich traveled to Italy for a tournament with Team Ohio and was named the Most Valuable Player.

Friedrich loves to make the hustle plays, but told the Louisville Courier-Journal in December about some of her highest marks.

"I had 23 points and hit two 3-pointers in a regular-season game against Sacred Heart," said Friedrich. "I had 14 rebounds against Brown. I like to rebound."

Wethington likes what he sees in Friedrich on and off the court.

"Katie isn't afraid to take a charge or get after it on the backboard," said Wethington. "But she's also gotten the work done in the classroom and is a great person. She's the ideal player I want to add to our team."

Assumption head coach Steve Small, in his second season with the Rockets after also coaching Western Kentucky's women's program for four years, called Friedrich the "total package".

"Academically, off the floor, on the floor, she is just a winner," said Small. "A winner in life and on the floor who refuses to lose and refuses not to work hard. Katie is a coach's dream to have a player with that mentality and attitude who is a total team player. "She just outworks everybody. Whatever we are working on, she's going to outwork everybody."

Friedrich plans to major in secondary education with an emphasis in history to ultimately become a history teacher.

"There's nothing I didn't like about Lindsey Wilson," said Friedrich. "I like the school, the coaches and just the environment. It felt like home."
