BLUEFIELD, WV - The Lindsey Wilson College football team ended its five-game losing streak today in convincing fashion with a 47-13 win over Bluefield (Bluefield, VA) College at Mitchell Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (3-6, 1-3 in the Mid-South Conference West Division) scored 30 first-quarter points and never looked back to keep the Rams winless on the season. Bluefield falls to 0-9 and 0-4 in the MSC West with the loss.

Cory Davenport opened the scoring on Lindsey Wilson's opening drive with a 19-yard scamper for the early 7-0 lead. While Davenport's touchdown run - the first of his career - was impressive, it was Mark Corbett's 31-yard completion to Matt Powers on a fake punt that kept the drive alive.

The Blue Raiders marched seven plays and 65 yards for the score.

It took a lot less time for Lindsey Wilson to score its next touchdown.

After forcing Bluefield into a three-and-out, Lindsey Wilson's Michael Bailey stripped Bluefield punter Mason Mables of the football and sprinted into the endzone from 19 yards out for the touchdown.

Corbett's point after made the score 14-0.

Following another Bluefield three-and-out, Lindsey Wilson quarterback Branden Cresap found Davenport streaking down the right sideline for a 15-yard touchdown to push the lead to 21-0. Cresap finished the game 23-for-32 for 268 yards and three touchdowns.

While the Lindsey Wilson offense found little resistance, the Blue Raider defense was just as impressive in the opening quarter.

The Blue Raiders held the Bluefield offense to just one first down and -2 total yards in the first 15 minutes of the game.

Down 21-0, things went from bad to worse for the Rams.

On its next drive, quarterback Cory Mabry fumbled inside the Bluefield 5-yard line and the ball squirted out of the back of the endzone for a safety to give Lindsey Wilson a 23-0 lead. During the play, Mabry suffered an injury and did not return to the game.

Lindsey Wilson used the next 2:38 to score its fourth touchdown of the quarter as the Blue Raiders marched 48 yards on eight plays to push the lead to 30-0.

Cresap finished the drive 5-for-7 for 63 yards capped off with a 3-yard toss to Powers for the touchdown.

The game remained 30-0 until the midway through the second quarter when Bluefield used an 11-play, 80-yard drive to post its first score of the day. Backup quarterback Greg Hampton found Rodrell Smith on a slant for the touchdown to cut the lead to 30-6. Mikel Hawks missed the extra point attempt -- his first miss of the season.

After failing to score on its two previous drives, Lindsey Wilson used nine plays to drive 40 yards to extend its lead to 37-6 with just over a minute left in the half. Davenport scored his third touchdown of the day and his second on the ground with a 1-yard run to give the Blue Raiders the 31-point lead at the break.

Davenport ended the day with a career-high 70 rushing yards on 10 carries. His three scores are also a career high and ties Powers with the team-high this season.

The Blue Raiders scored the only points of the third quarter as Cresap connected with three different receivers to march 74 yards to extend the lead to 44-6.

Starting on the Lindsey Wilson 26-yard line, Cresap hit Emilio Gonzalez for nine yards to begin the drive. Next, Cresap found Chris Dobbins on a screen pass and he scurried 28 yards to the Bluefield 37-yard line. Cresap ended the drive on the next play with a touchdown toss over the middle to Shannan Coofer.

Corbett capped the Blue Raiders' scoring at the beginning of the fourth quarter with a 24-yard field goal to give LWC the 47-6 lead.

Bluefield responded with the longest drive of the day -- 17 plays and 86 yards -- and its second score en route to the 47-13 loss.

The Rams amassed 166 of the team's 195 total yards on their two scoring drives.

While the Lindsey Wilson defense was dominant most of the day, the Blue Raider offense posted 499 total yards -- 299 through the air and 200 on the ground.

Twelve different receivers caught at least one ball during the game led by Dobbins' four catches for 43 yards. Coofer and Powers each had three catches for a team-best 48 yards apiece.

Defensively, Sam Wilson set a single-game, program-record with three sacks and led the team with seven tackles, including four for a loss.

Josh Wells finished with 60 yards rushing while Hampton was 10-for-23 for 101 passing yards to lead the Rams. - Chris Wells Next: Lindsey Wilson Football vs. Bethel University at Columbia, KY
