Adair County Retired Teachers Association honored Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Ed Waggener Adair County Judge Ann Melton and Columbia Mayor Mark D. Harris jointly signed a proclamation declaring the week of October 15-21, 2012 as Columbia/Adair County Retired Teachers week. The signing took place in a special ceremony in the Adair Annex, Tuesday morning, October 2, 2012, with Adair County Retired Teachers Association President Bobbie Coomer, Vice President Rita Marshall, Secretary Rita Campbell, and member Carolyn Hancock in attendance. Retired teachers in Adair County are 153 members strong, with 128 of that number also members of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association. The Adair County association received the Gold Seal Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Reaching the Goals and Objectives of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association in 2011-2012. The Adair unit is active in many endeavors. Officers attend regional and state meetings and bring back information important to local retired teachers including details of membership, health insurance and legislative issues. Each year the Adair County group awards a $500 scholarship to an Adair County Student enrolled at Lindsey Wilson College who is pursuing a teacher education degree. The local group contributes to the N.O. Kimbler Scholarship Fund in memory of Adair County Retired Teachers. The association participates in community service projects, including a school supply drive, Grandparent Essay Contest, and donates food items to the Adair County Food Pantry. Individual retired teachers contribute to the community through volunteer activities involving schools, nursing homes, hospitals, churches, and charity drives such as the Relay for Life. Each year, the group welcomes and honors new Adair County Teacher retirees. For these efforts, and others, CJE Ann Melton and Mayor Mark D. Harris encourage Columbians and all of Adair County to honor teachers and especially retired teachers in the special week and throughout the year. This story was posted on 2012-10-02 10:24:16
