Darlene Campbell and I painted the hydrant with the consent of Lenny Stone and the water department. I'm glad you like it and we like the idea of bringing a smile to passersby. Darlene and I are both members of the Columbia Woman's Club and one of our club's priorities is improving our community.

The Dalmatian is thought to originate in Dalmatia in the Republic of Croatia. It was brought to England and used as a carriage dog. Firefighting at that time was with horse drawn wagons, an easy transfer from the carriage. The dogs cleared the way for the pumpers by running beside them and nipping the horses' feet to make them go faster. Horses were afraid of fire and the Dalmatian was a distraction to the horses allowing firefighters to get closer to the fire. The dogs also guarded the equipment in the wagon while the firemen were battling the fire.

These dogs also had great ability to catch and kill rats, an asset to a firehouse. Horses could easily identify the Dalmatian from other dogs, so Dalmatians were kept in service by being fire house dogs. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Dalmatian Fire Hydrant

2012-08-14 - W. Guardian & Burkesville Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Some observed two phantom painters working on this fire hydrant and wondered what was going on. Haven't gotten a reason why, but it's turned out to be a great piece of street art, and Columbia's first Dalmatian fire hydrant - as cute as a speckled pup. If anyone else knows the perpetrators, hope they'll let us know. We'd like to publicly thank them for making more people smile.
