Carol Perkins report on how Yard Sale is going

Carol Perkins and Friends are having a Yard Sale in Style. In an Air Condition Store. It's really big and we asked her to share her experience with others who might try the same. She does, noting in Carol Perkins style that among other things, the Yard Sale is doing a great business just from the purchases the hosts are making from each other!

By Carol Perkins

Having an indoor, air-conditioned place for a continuous yard sale is a perfect way to do business. My mother happened to have a vacant shop next door to her house, and while she is looking for a business renter, my friends and I have filled it to the brim with our valuables that aren't as valuable because we have either outgrown them or they have been unused for years! We all have treasures that others will appreciate that we are tired of dusting or wearing.

The funniest thing about our venture has been the way we have bought each other's stuff. "I can't make any money if I keep buying your things," said Becky. I had a huge stuffed horse she bought for her grandson, and Judy bought some of my grandson's clothes (the child has far too many clothes as most kids do). I sized them from infant to size five. If you need school clothes, come on out!

Shoes. We have lined the walls with shoes. Becky (Bell) helped me put mine out one afternoon. She sat in the middle of the floor, I dumped the bags of shoes around her, and she priced them. Naturally, it took a while to find all the mates. "I think I can wear these," she said as she tried on two or three pairs!

One of the funniest situation occurred when a woman told Judy (Irvin) that she would have bought a free-standing shelf of Becky's if it had been green. Judy was telling this to Becky. Becky's reply, "It IS green." Evidently, the woman thought it was black, so if she reads this and wants the ironwork shelf, it is still available.

Since we are only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, we each get a turn. Becky said, "I'm having such fun I don't mind working at all." Since I have my screenprinting store (Main Street Screenprinting) and work there from 10-5, I'm happy she is happy. My job has been to advertise and restock, although I have been told NOT to bring anything for a few days because the store is FULL.

As I was sitting in my den floor, surrounded by clothes that I was pricing while watching TV, Guy noticed that I had a box of undergarments. "People will buy those?" he said shocked. I launched into how expensive they are and people are glad to find good, used ones." His reply, "Next thing I know you'll be taking my underwear out of the drawers!"

My best story, thus far, happened today. I had a letter in the mail, postmarked Nashville, but with no return address. There was a note attached and 37 cents taped to the note. A lady had been in the store, looked at a purse and in the bottom of it was loose change, which she absentmindedly stuck in her pocket. When she put the purse back and forgot all about having that change in her pocket, she felt so guilty about taking it that she mailed it to me. That says VOLUMES about the character of that lady, whoever she may be, and reaffirms that there are more good people than bad in this world.

We will continue with our sales through Labor Day and maybe beyond. After all, I do have LOTS of winter things. Not to be patting myself on the back because losing weight is a long, hard process, but I have dropped four sizes since January and am getting rid of those larger clothes, from 16 on up and up. A good chance for someone to rack up. - Carol Perkins
