News from Adair County School District A-Teams

The Adair County High School and Middle School Academic Teams competed at the Governor's Cup State Championships this weekend with award-winning finishes in five different events. The teams brought home a total four State Championships at the statewide competition, a new all-time high for the schools.

The ACHS Future Problem Solving team capped the awards ceremony off finishing in a tight race for the State Championship in 3rd Place overall, thus securing one of the prestigious bids to the International Championships in June. This is now the sixth year in a row that the Adair County school district has qualified for the event. Team competitors were Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Kyle Castaneda, and Sarah McQuaide. This marks the third year that all four competitors have advanced to the world championships as part of either the high school or middle school teams.

Heather Jackson (ACHS 11th grader) and Rebecca Montgomery (ACMS 8th grader) both took home 1st Place honors in the Future Problem Solving Scenario Writing in the High School and Middle Grades divisions respectively. With their victories, both competitors will also qualify for Internationals in June as well. Jessi Taylor (ACHS 9th grader) finished in 2nd Place in the event. This marks the first time Adair County has swept the top two spots at the event at State Finals. Jackson has now advanced to Internationals an impressive three years in a row, and she is a former Top 5 finisher at the world championships. Montgomery has now qualified for her second time in this event. Montgomery was a part of last year's Top 10-winning ACMS team in the team event as well.

Adair County High School swept both divisions in the FPS Alternates competition as well. Leane Blackwelder and Amber Turner led their teams to 1st Place finishes in their respective divisions, marking the third year in a row ACHS has won this competition.

The ACMS Future Problem Solving team missed out on a top 10 finish by just one ranking slot at the event.

ACHS's Heather Jackson was also one question away from securing the school's first ever Top 10 finish in Language Arts. In a tight race at the top, Jackson was only one question behind the 8th-10th ranked competitors in the event. Jackson finished the highest the school has ever finished at the event.

Adair County's FPS team will now be attending the world championships June 7-10 held at Indiana University. With the team's 6th year in a row of qualification, they are only one of three schools in Kentucky that have achieved this feat. Adair County also has the distinction of being the only Kentucky school district to have finished in the Top 10 worldwide in the prestigious team and/or individual event for the past six consecutive years. The competition will feature representative teams from four continents and 40-plus U.S. states that have also qualified through various levels of competition throughout the year. Chad Parnell
