A Saturday trip to town was a big event Letter from James O. Absher reminds Jennifer Carter of the excitement a trip to town, to Columbia, KY, with her parents, Arminda and Marion Fudge, was in the 70's and 80's. By Jennifer Carter We are really showing our age by naming names, but I too remember Nell's, Ben Franklin, Lerman's, Loy's Department Store, and many other businesses on the square. In my younger days -in the 70's and 80's - Saturday was a big day to come to town and go to the different stores around the Square. Daddy, Marion Fudge, would park on the square and he would either get his hair cut or pay bills or just visit while my Mom, Arminda Fudge, and I would start out at Ben Franklin. I would go up and down each aisle and end with an Icee or candy. Then it was on to sometimes Loys's Department Store or Lerman's. Ms. Betty Coop worked at Lerman's and we would talk with her while we looked around. We would always end in the basement of Russell's visiting with Ms. Beatrice Hagan. Then we would always know, even without a cell phone, which was available in those days, when Daddy was ready to go, cause we would meet him at the car. We would usually go to Burger Queen and eat before going to Houchen's to get our weekly groceries. I say weekly cause we rarely went to the grocery store during the week; if you ran out you made do until the next Saturday. Those were good days and I sometimes miss the simplicity of getting excited to go to town on Saturday mornings. Thanks to James O. Absher for the walk down memory lane now that both my parents are gone. I cherish those memories and they always bring a smile to my face. -JENNIFER CARTER.
