Vietnam veteran gets blessing himself, volunteering at OKCC

Two Hundred American servicemen and women were honored at Veterans Appreciation Day. Betty Ollestad asked Vietnam Veteran, Black Lion Joe Hare to help as a greeter. He did and found the two days of volunteer service were not only a great honor, but gave him a tremendous personal joy as well

Betty Ollestad, owner of OK County Cooking here in Columbia, KY held a Veterans Tribute on July 2nd and 3rd, as she is closed on Sundays.

This tribute was done from the heart, not because business is needed. The place already runs over.

All vets were greeted and she had sign-in book where around 200 vets checked in on Friday and Saturday. This is a pretty good number as Columbia is a town of only 4,000.

Two of these 200 were female veterans and one was an Australian veteran, whose wife had just deployed to Afghanistan on Tuesday, June 29, 2010.

Each one was given a patriotic tee shirt and their name was entered for a drawing for a total of $500 that will be given away Monday, July 5, 2010.

I am a friend of Betty's and she ask me to help with the greeting, as I am a vet.

I went out early Friday and had so much fun visiting with the vets who came in, that I stayed until 7pmCT and then back early Saturday morning and greeted until I had put in 20 hours in the two days.

I was the one blessed by all this. The last vet I talked with was 96 years young, a vet of WW II, Korea and Vietnam, and sharp as a tack. What a joy and honor.

God Bless Betty for what she did and Bless All Our Troops. Here she greets one of our WW II vets Mr Edgar Holmes who is very proud of America and his service.
