Detrick Briggs, CU, 19th in NAIA triple jump championship By Chris Megginson MARION, IN - Detrick Briggs return to the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships didn't go as planned Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University. The Campbellsville University junior finished No. 19 of 21 in the triple jump competition with a jump of 13.72 meters (45 feet, 0.25 inches). His best jump was his first jump, as his next two attempts fell shorter each time by a tenth of a meter. "I came up there and I was feeling alright, but after my first jump ... It was a jump that I wasn't expecting, and it just went downhill from there," Briggs said. Shortly after Briggs' first jump, Fresno Pacific University freshman Eugene Vollmer had the longest jump of the day with a distance of 15.29 meters. The long leap seemed to deflate the rest of the first flight, as Vollmer went on to win the national title with a 15.04-meter leap in the finals. Briggs, a Louisville, KY, native, missed the finals by 0.64 meters, needing to jump at least 14.36 to reach the Top 9. Though his first return to the NAIA Championships since being a walk-on freshman in 2008 didn't work out as he planned, Briggs is still pleased about the final month of his season. "I finished the season on a good note even though the NAIA didn't go as well as I planned," Briggs said. "I've just got to suck it up and look forward to next year and getting better. I'll be coming for it next year." His best distance of the year came May 7 at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships, where he won his second-straight NCCAA national title with a jump of 14.66 meters. He jumped 14.37 at the University of Louisville Twilight meet the next week and jumped 13.86 in April to win the Mid-South Conference championship. The Top 15 finish ends Briggs' third season of competition at Campbellsville. He opened the season by earning the most points (26) of any male athlete at the Small College Invitational at Berea College in mid-March.
