Epicurean Kentuckian: Vinegar pie on Clinch Mountain Big Al Owens finds home of the Original Vinegar Pie, and highly recommends it By Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker Reporting from on the road near Bean Station, TN On my many travels I was fortunate enough to find this gem on 25E in Tennessee. This is a beautiful place. I ate at the Clinch Mountain Diner. I had pinto beans, fried taters, cornbread and vinegar pie. During the Great Depression, the ladies of Clinch Mountain could not afford to buy lemons for lemon pie so they searched their cupboards for a substitute and found vinegar; thus vinegar pie was born. I tried a piece and this pie is delicious. It is the trademark for Clinch Mountain. Clinch Mountain overlooks Cherokee Lake in Tennessee. IF YOU GO Clinch Mountain Lookout Restaurant, 190 Lookout Mountain RD, Thorn Hill, TN, is 157 miles from Columbia, KY: If you take the US25e exit in Corbin from I-75 and follow it through Corbin, KY, You will find this gem. This is a shortcut to I-81. Cherokee Lake has over 30,000 acres of water. It is 52 miles long, with a 460 mile shoreline. Cherokee Lake features world-class fishing for walleye, crappie, black bass, and sauger! -Big Al Editor note: Thanks. Never can forget stopping here in travels in the 1950s with my father, the late E.P. Waggener, on our way to deliver tobacco spears he manufactured to the wholesalers in Bristol, Johnson City, Morristown, and Knoxville, TN. It also reminds me of the late Dr. Billy K. Neat, the noted varmintologist, who could offer such wonderful description of the pintos and cornbread and the country ham at the restaurant on top of Clinch Mountain. -EW This story was posted on 2010-04-10 09:57:06
