Save the Adair Co., KY Courthouse tour: Do we have a ghost?

Save the Courthouse committee toured the building on Friday, July 31, 2009. Old building is full of fascinating structures, beautiful woodwork, legends, with just one shortcoming: It needs a ghost, this group was told: Dan Antle, Barbara Armitage, Ernestine Bennett, Bob Burt, Nancy J. Cozby, Sherri Crawhorn, Billy Joe Fudge, Wid Harris, Lee Ann Jessee, Vonnie Kolbenschlag, Susan Loy, Martha B. Martin, Mary Frances May, Carol Meadows, Emily Sargent, Donna Shirley, Linda Waggener, Ellen Zornes, and J.D. Zornes; they were joined later by Charles Grimsley and Joe Moore

That was the first question asked by Barbara Armitage, Chairperson of the Ideas/Renters Committee, at the Save the Adair County Courthouse tour meeting on Friday, July 31, 2009. She said that if no ghost came with the building the marketing committee would need to manufacture one as quickly as possible.

Circuit Court Clerk Dennis Loy, designated tour guide, said he knew of no courthouse ghost but agreed with Billy Joe Fudge who suggested perhaps the legend of "Old Rob" might bring out the ghost of former clerk Billy Neat. Loy pondered that tales of the former clerk might just possibly do the job.

Story of a hole in the basement under the courthouse

Donna Shirley said that there was a story about a hole in the basement under the courthouse that linked to a set of caves under downtown. It was remembered that the square opened up once in front of the old Firestone store, between it and the courthouse, to prove that. The initial group of 19, representing each of the three committees that make up the team working to save the Adair County Courthouse, toured the building from the basement, checking for a cave entrance, to the clock tower where it looked like a Harry Potter movie scene could be filmed without adding or removing a thing.

The three committees are the following:

  • Funding Committee:
Ellen Zornes, chairperson; Ron Heath, vice chairperson. Members are Linda Waggener, Sherri Crawhorn, Kaye Bowman, Susan Loy, Emily Sargent, Mary Frances May, Billy Joe Fudge, Vonnie Kolbenschlag. Lee Ann Jessee, and Magistrates Billy Dean Coffey (5) and Sammy Baker (2).

  • Ideas/Renters Committee:
Barbara Armitage chairperson; Sherri Crawhorn, vice chairperson; Richard Phelps, Bobby Beard, Roger Meadows, Mike Watson, Linda Lewis, Carol Meadows, Wanda Beard, Donna Shirley, Charles Grimsley, Ellen Zornes, Wanda Hill, Wayne Armitage, Ernestine Bennett, Phyllis Goodin, with Magistrates Terry Hadley (7) and Perry Reeder (4) and Columiba City Councillor Craig Dean.

  • Restoration Committee:
George Kolbenslag, chairperson; Bobby Beard, vice chairperson. Dan Antle, Bobby Beard, Charles Grimsley, Sherri Crawhorn, Lisa Lee, JD Zornes, with Magistrates Danny Goodin (1), Magistrate, Wid Harris (2), Magistrate Joe Rogers (6) and Columbia City Counclllor Joe Moore.
Many discoveries were made

Many discoveries were made and theories discussed which might turn into just the ticket to save the courthouse and give it new life when the offices move out into the new justice center in November, 2009.

Ideas from marketing around ghost stories and hangings to charging a fee to ring the old bell got imaginations working while those who knew about such things examined old wiring and plumbing challenges. Overall it was a very successful meeting

Committee members present for the tour were:Dan Antle, Barbara Armitage, Ernestine Bennett, Bob Burt, Nancy J. Cozby, Sherri Crawhorn, Billy Joe Fudge, Wid Harris, Lee Ann Jessee, Vonnie Kolbenschlag, Susan Loy, Martha B. Martin, Mary Frances May, Carol Meadows, Emily Sargent, Donna Shirley, Linda Waggener, Ellen Zornes, and J.D. Zornes. They were joined afterward by Charles Grimsley and Joe Moore.

The original courthouse meeting was called by County Judge Ann Melton for June 30, 2009, who presided at the meeting, with input from Mayor Patrick R. Bell. The meeting room in the Courthouse Basement was full. While many different opinions were voiced, not a single person there did not support preservation of the buiding. For the story of that meeting, click onOverwhelming support buoys hope for preserving Courthouse Story of the first meeting on July 30, 2009. Save the Courthouse Tour: Lunacy Inquests

2009-08-02 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
One of the titles Adair Circuit Court Clerk Dennis Loy noted on the of the Adair County Courthouse on Friday, July 31, 2009, was the one on this thick book, "Lunacy Inquests." The book is one of the old record books stashed in the loft leading to the clocktower bell. Many other record books are in need of better archival care. An Adair Genealogical Library is one of the suggestions made for the use of the courthouse, with ancient records such as the Lunacy Inquests available for research.

Step back in time inside the old Adair County Courthouse, and look out on the present with a different perspective. The Save the Courthouse tour went the stairway on the Greensburg Street Side. Top left Adair County Genealogy Librarian Ernestine Bennett is framed by the tree looking out on the Visions Communication/Adair Annex/Murrell Burton Corner. She's on the the Judge's Chamber landing on the second floor. Bottom right: Looking out Greensburg Street, from the Judge's Chamber. Save the Courthouse Tour: To the Harry Potter Room

2009-08-02 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener.
A 'Harry Potter' mystery unfolded on the third floor landing of the courthouse as the photos above show. The crowd had gotten smaller on each landing and this was the point where only the brave at heart continued. Top left Adair County Pubic Library Director Lee Ann Jessee slowly turned the know to enter one large room filled with dust covered, ages-old books around the walls and in piles on the floor. A narrow staircase on the opposite wall from the windows led up to a three-foot tall door just below the ceiling. Ellen Zornes, chair of the fundraising committee, stands at the top of the stairs, ready to enter. Or not. There was much discussion and thought as people went up the stairs, looked in the little door and came back down the stairs again. Far right, Ernestine Bennett, Genealogy Librian, posed at the entrance to the final leg of the journey to the clock tower. Looking inside the door, another staircase on the far wall, accessed through the booklined walkway, led to the courthouse clock.

Save the Courthouse Tour: Better Pedestrian approaches a must

2009-08-02 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
The view from the Courthouse steps out Jamestown Street. Many believe the old Courthouse can never have a fully useful presence, beyond its unquestioned raison d'etre for its unequalled beauty as a beautiful building, until there the pedestrian is gven top priority and those on foot can approach the building safely from anywhere. Traffic above the speed of 15 mph threatens walkers. Slower traffic would also help downtown business, too, many believe.

Save the Courthouse Tour: Stairs and more

2009-08-02 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
If for no other reason, the courthouse is worth saving for the wonderful old stairs. Two stairs are shown above. The left ones are steep stairs to an upper level, the ones next to the right are very sturdy, but rough stairs to the belfry. In the second photo from left, Billy Joe Fudge is doing some forensic work. The next picture, with the door ajar, is into the courtroom, and the sign says, "No shorts allowed." The next two photos are of storage items, and on the ar right, looking down from the second story at the HVAC units, now on their last season for cooling - with heating components which have been given last rites.
