A Tribute to Joe George at 80 The Creelsboro, Russell Co., KY native courted an Adair County girl on Melson Ridge, the love of his life, Anna Louise Helm. He won her heart, married her, and they had 56 years together with a closeknit family. They shared love through hard times and tragedy, but enjoyed more good times, as well. Today, in retirement, he still wears that wonderful smile, enjoys playing bingo with his friends at Ol Homeplace in Columbia, and gets a kick out of hearing his name called on the radio station when they play his favorite Gospel hymns, dedicated to Joe George. Click on headline for complete story plus photo By Joyce Williams and Renee' Stinson Proud to be the daughters of Joe George Joe George turns 80 years old, today, July 17th, 2009. He has long outlived most of his old friends as well as his wife, three sons, and two grandchildren. He was born to Benjamin and Rinda George in Creelsboro, KY. He later moved to the Melson Ridge community after marrying the love of his life, the late Anna Louise Helm George who died at age 70, January 17, 2005. Six children came to their union During their 56 years of marriage they had six children, four boys and two girls. Prior to the marriage Joe would ride his horse from Creelsboro, down on the Cumberland River, up the long hills to Melson Ridge to court Anna. Joe George worked many long hours for many timbermen in the logs woods of the area, until a disabling injury occurred. Tragedy struck early and too often From very early on Joe and Anna's lives were extremely hard. Their first born child lived only two months. They lost another son at just six years of age, and much later, they lost a third son at 34 years old. With the first two sons our parents, Joe and Anna spent countless hours at hospitals, trying to save their children, but to no avail. In 2005 Joe lost his beloved wife Anna. Through all of his trials and struggles, he still wears a smile. He enjoys joking and picking on anyone who will joke back. He has developed many close friends at the Ole Home Place in Columbia, where he enjoys bingo all week. Favorite pastime comes weekly, after church each Sunday However, his favorite pastime is after church on Sundays, when he rushes home to listen to the gospel singing on the radio and to see how many songs are dedicated for him. He really loves that music. I know it may get on some people's nerves to hear his name so often, but I believe it is therapeutic for him when he hears his name being called on certain songs. It doesn't take so much to make to brighten this man's day. Knowing favorite songs on the radio are dedicated to him is one way to make him happy. His family is having a surprise party at his apartment on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 3:00pmCT. This story was posted on 2009-07-17 03:49:35
