Letter: Wants Fiscal Court to reconsider band help

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

While visiting in Columbia this past weekend, I learned that the Fiscal Court had declined to contribute funds toward the Adair Band's trip to New York for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

I dare say, one would be hard pressed to locate a fiscal court in any other town in America that would deny helping its young people make a trip such as this. Especially, when its the Adair County Band, a nationally-recognized, award-winning band program.

Tim Allen and his band have made themselves available, when humanly possible, to support community events for over 20 years.

Now when they need support, it is denied. I'm certain there are many worthy causes/projects the court must consider when divvying out funds.

However, if Columbia/Adair County is in such dire straits that funding is not available to help the band in this effort, then all I can say is, or the first time in my adult life: I am ashamed of my hometown.

I am respectfully urging the fiscal court to reconsider its recent decision.

s/Beverly Merritt
