Bradsfordville gets $500,000 block grant for Seniors Center Governor Ernie Fletcher today announced a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the City Of Bradfordsville in Marion County for renovations of the first floor of the Bradfordsville School to make a permanent home for the Bradfordsville Senior Center. Bradsfordville is approximately 22 miles from Casey Creek, Adair County, KY. "As our population gets older, it is critical to have a place and opportunity for our seniors to continue to stay active and lead healthy lifestyles," said Governor Fletcher. "This renovation is a win-win situation for the Bradfordsville School and seniors in the community." The CDBG funds will be used to renovate the first floor of the school as well as general rehabilitation work, HVAC, plumbing and electrical work, renovation of the gym and kitchen work. The renovation would enable the Bradfordsville seniors to expand the intergenerational activities they are committed to, such as senior tutoring and grandparent programs. Bradfordsville seniors take responsibility for helping the children of their community with programs scheduled for after school hours. The center's close proximity to outdoor recreational facilities will offer seniors a one stop facility where all of their community, social, educational and physical exercise needs can be met. Once the first phase of the project is complete, plans for a second phase include rehabilitating the second floor to create six one-bedroom, ADA compliant, apartments for low and moderate income seniors. Seniors in Bradfordsville currently use a temporary meeting space, because the building they were using was sold by its owner."The entire community and especially our seniors will benefit greatly from this project because it will give our seniors a place to meet near their homes, and it will once again give the Bradfordsville School building a purpose," said Sen. Dan Kelly (R-Springfield). "This project is important because the school has been such a vital part of the community," said Rep. Jimmy Higdon (R-Lebanon). "By giving our seniors opportunities to raise their quality of life and serve as positive role models to our children, the community benefits as a whole." Kentucky's U. S. Congressional leaders' continued support of the CDBG program has made the funding available nationally as well as within the commonwealth. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes these funds available through the Governor's Office for Local Development.
