History Monday: The freeze of 1886 Mike Watson sends this excerpt from the Columbia Spectator, 3 February 1886: This last cold wave beats all old time weather clear out of sight--cattle, hogs and poultry froze to death all through this country. One old fellow's thermometer went down so low it never come back. Some registered 21 and some 32 and Capt. Billy Elliott's reached 40 degrees below Zero. An old fellow living over the [Cumberland] River says his gewholker on Monday morning went down 53 degrees below "Cairo." This story was posted on 2024-04-29 10:04:31
