Big rigs off the historic square - ideas By Linda Waggener Ideas have been coming in about how to encourage large trucks to use the Veterans Memorial Bypass instead of the historic Public Square in Columbia. And I have an idea to add to those linked below. Let's agree to make one thing clear right up front - we respect truck drivers. Almost everything that comes in and goes out, here and all across America, does so by truck. Drivers keep them going day and night. But, what if the City/County designates an educational campaign? Law enforcement can block off the Square in times of celebration, right? So, what if they select one upcoming month as Bypass-Education-Campaign-Month? This would be a month to block one street at a time coming onto the Square and stop each large non-delivery-downtown truck. Our friends in law enforcement could give drivers a helpful map and request they please use the bypass. No tickets, simply information and a request. This would begin the conversation among the driver population and they would share the word that there's a better way to get through Columbia. Unless a truck is making a delivery to the square, GPS should be giving directions for the bypass - but it doesn't, as evidenced by big trucks lost and stuck, most recently on Guardian Street. The state has yet to provide requested signage - and GPS simply continues to direct large trucks onto tiny streets through town. This idea is about a friendly educational campaign, no tickets, just reminders that we do have a bypass for large trucks and Columbia really needs to make everyone aware to please use it unless there's a delivery. What do you think? Here are the ideas that have come in most recently: Letter, law enforcement Letter, yield signs Letter: signs and citations Letter: leadership/ordinances> Letter: Semi blocking traffic on Square Letter: Signage before the exit might help The picture that started recent discussions.
