Carol Perkins: Circle the Square Previous Column: Stay OUT By Carol Perkins "Let's go circle the square," one of us would say to the driver before it was time to go home. We had probably left Gene's Freeze after going to the Strand Theater in town. One more trip around the square was a must. We were sixteen. I recently laughed at this memory and the fact that it is impossible to circle our square. We had to "square" our square, from the Corner Restaurant, past the Filling Station and around to the old upper bank (PCA building by then), and then cut the corner in front of Butler Funeral Home and pass the old post office (Sharon Howard's office) and down to the corner where the bank sat. In front of the bank, the night watchman kept vigil or made his rounds around the high school, down by the old school, out the Glasgow Road, and the Blueberry Hill area where drag races occurred. On the weekends, some adults parked their cars in front of what is now the memorial and they "watched" the square. They were gone by eight and we had the square to ourselves. Much later, while the town was fast asleep, the nightwatchman was away from his spot, and boys had taken their dates home, a few daring ones "marked off" the square, squealing tires and waking the City Judge, Ruby Wallace, whose home was within walking distance of town. She once said that she was wakened one night by these speed demons. She "hightailed it" down to the corner of the street, wearing her gown and robe, flagged down the boys, and threatened them with jail if they didn't go home. They listened to Ms. Ruby and knew she meant business. All those reckless teens (or most of them) became responsible citizens. Most teens go through dangerous, life-threatening situations and come out with memories they like to tell. "I remember the time" is how we started the stories about "marking off the square" and "circling" one last time. (I still like to circle the square.)
