Phillip Coffey - Last Ride

Last Ride - By Phillip Coffey

Become quite a gentleman - no more using his spurs.
Removing his sidearm from his holster while unfolding
His bedroll before riding off into the sunset -
A day he always feared and dread.

Sometimes he was embittered by the things he had seen
Or heard - other moments by the stuff he had done.
Took off to mend all the fences he had broken.
And even those times he may have seemed too curt.

Into the heat, trying to shake off the cold chills
Of the late evening with not much else on his mind.
As he placed his left boot in the stirrup of his well-worn
Saddle for the very last time with help from his true friends
That were always near his heart.

He dares not gallop on his pale horse into the unknown
But first he turned and waved to those left behind
With a grin and 'ambeer' dripping from the corners of his lips.

The last ride for the old cowboy-now is the end of his elongated shift.
No more herding cattle or driving cattle across the vast plains
While supping down strong black coffee- never sugared or tan.

To my brother, Roy - a horseman - I was in my younger days but no more. I have no horses. Roy does not do tobacco; nor do I. Just some memories stored.
