Basketball: LWC Women kick off season with win over Union

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team outscored Union (KY) by 18 points during the opening quarter to roll to a 74-42 win in their home opener on Friday evening at Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson saw 13 players score points in the contest as Sydnie Hall paced all scorers with 12 points.

Amelia Hodges and Alera Barbee were the only other Blue Raiders in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Maleigha Oldham and Jordyn Stephens pitched in with eight points as Oldham added five of the Blue Raiders 18 steals in the game.

Carla Moreno dominated the glass grabbing 13 boards and helping the Blue Raiders to 48 in the contest. Lindsey Wilson grabbed 12 more rebounds in the contest than Union.

The Blue Raiders knocked down 36.4 percent of their field goal attempts while limiting the Bulldogs to a 31.3 mark. LWC managed 29 more field goal attempts than their counterparts. Lindsey Wilson's defensive effort in the game forced the Bulldogs into 28 turnovers which resulted in 21 points for LWC.

Amelia Hodges opened the game and the season with the first points as she knocked down two free throws just over two minutes into the contest. Union and LWC traded baskets over the next minute to a slight 6-5 LWC lead. Lindsey Wilson then mounted a 22-5 run, scoring the final eight points of the quarter, to lead 28-10.

Over the opening 10 minutes, the Blue Raiders knocked down 52.6 percent of their attempts from the floor.

Lindsey Wilson cooled off in the second quarter but still managed to outscore the Bulldogs 11-7 to take a 39-17 lead into the break. The Blue Raiders shot their lowest percentage in the third frame, making just 20 percent of their attempts. LWC and the Bulldogs poured in an equal 13 points over the span as the Lindsey Wilson lead held a 22 point lead at 52-30.

The Blue Raiders shot an even 50 percent in the final quarter, knocking down 8-of-16 attempts. Their play resulted in 22 more points as they rolled to a 74-42 win.

Lindsey Wilson is back on the court Monday when they welcome Brescia (Ky.) to Biggers Sports Center. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. CT.
