F150 goes green at Don Franklin Ford in Columbia

By Tom Waggener

The Don Franklin Ford crew was kind enough to let me use their electric vehicle charger for my Rivian R1T while in town this weekend and I was surprised to find two new F150 Lightnings on the lot.

The fully electric Lighting is Ford Motors' first all electric pickup truck and it has big shoes to fill as the F Series is the top selling line of vehicles in the USA.

This was the second time I had gotten to see the new Ford EV in person and, had it not been pointed out, I would have walked right by it.

Aside from the Lighting badging, it looks much like any other Ford F150 out today with a similar body and features. But the Lighting is powered by a full electric drivetrain and a 145 Kilowatt battery pack.

It looks and feels a lot bigger than my Rivian which is more of a sport and adventure truck, whereas the F150 lightning is a full size work truck capable of powering a work sight, or acting as a back up generator for a house with the right home equipment installed.

Inside the Lightning feels like an F150 with most of the premium features and materials found on the comparable gas powered F series trucks. The finishes are premium, the seats are like a well worn barcalounger and the Lightning suspension makes the ride quality like a Cadillac.

My favorite feature of the Lightning has to be the massive front trunk (or frunk to the EV community) which allows you to load heavy items at about waist level rather than hoisting up and over a grill and it features a bank of various outlets allowing you to run a whole host of power tools, chargers and laptops.

As with all electric vehicles, acceleration is quick and smooth with plenty of torque off the line capable of moving this massive truck 0-60 in around 4 seconds.

Everyone was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and gave me the lowdown of the Lightening's features in my 5 mile test drive.

RIDES: Comparing electric and regular Ford 150 trucks

2022-10-04 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Electrifying American vehicles is still in its infancy but it's growing by leaps and bounds. Dan Franklin, at left, and his son Nathaniel, talked about electric vehicles - including the two F150 fully electric trucks on the lot in Columbia - with Tom Waggener who shares his EV experiences over the past five years in the article linked to this picture. For the record, Moms Barbara Franklin and I are still hanging with our gas powered vehicles, and just beginning to consider hybrids, maybe, but we're a long way from the idea of a fully electric vehicle. We do trust our family, however, as Dan, Nathaniel and Tom agree that a sea change is happening in the auto industry and our world might as well get used to EVs for our future driving. - LW

RIDES: First EV charging station in Columbia

2022-10-06 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Columbia's first public charging station for electric vehicles is a level 2 charger available at Don Franklin Ford during regular business hours and can be accessed off hours with permission from the owners.

The Charger is a J1772 style charger which is compatible with most electric vehicles. Tesla owners will have to provide their own adapter to use the charger. Aside from Tesla vehicles, the J1772 is compatible with most electric vehicles currently in production.

As America continues to grow in its ownership of electric vehicles, charging options are growing as and Don Franklin Ford is happy to offer the charging station to the public as we move towards more electric cars on the road. The Franklins just ask that you check in by phone or in person prior to hooking up.
