Kentucky Color: Bowling Green Downtown Square

By Billy Joe Fudge

Libby and I spent a couple of hours in downtown Bowling Green on Saturday. Several interesting shops with clothing, home decor, gifts, sports bars, restaurants, cookies, candy, cigars and fresh squeezed lemonade.

With lemonade in hand, we cabbaged one of the park benches in some deep, black shade in the Fountain Square for a very relaxing time. We should take the time every once in a while to sit down and watch life happen.

It takes a little time to hear the fountain waters splash; to appreciate the gentle breeze passing through the shade; to follow the undulating, darting flight of a bat in broad open daylight; to experience the youthful exuberance of a high school girls volleyball team divided into groups of six, joyfully competing in a scavenger hunt; to appreciate the huge American linden casting its shade, deep and wide for all to enjoy, and to agree with passers-by that it is a truly beautiful day!

We must take the time to discover;
"That home is not in urban sprawl,
And joy is not in super mall.
A home with joy for you and me-
Is found, yes is found - amidst the trees."

A shady spot on the Bowling Green Public Square inspired Billy Joe to remember the following poem:
We must take the time to discover;
"That home is not in urban sprawl,
And joy is not in super mall.
A home with joy for you and me-
Is found, yes is found - amidst the trees."
