Commentary: What can we do?

NOTE: The author of this piece has asked for their name not to be published, but contact information is on file with Columbia Magazine.

I am writing this for a two fold reason. First, I want to thank the county, our magistrate, and the inmates for recently picking up trash along my road. They did a wonderful job and worked in the hot sun picking up the trash of those who have deemed this community as their private dump.

Within 3 days, it was again inundated with trash, and continues to accumulate daily.

Second I want to ask what are we going to do about this? I hear a lot of people talking about how bad it looks across the county, but nothing being done about it. Those who have taken it upon themselves to personally pick up the trash of others around the county are to be commended. They do so because they have something those littering do not have, PRIDE!

To those who are littering, you have no excuse. What you are doing is disrespectful, lazy, and illegal. Do us all a favor, and if you feel the need to throw your filth out the window, wait till you get home, roll down your window, and throw it in your own yard.

I am asking those who love and appreciate the beauty of where we live to come together and come up with a solution. I am asking our county and city officials to make serious efforts to hold those who are littering accountable. And I am asking everyone to Keep Adair Clean!
