Bluebirds perished in ice and snow storms

By Wendy Butler Burt

Cleaning out your bird houses is a very sad task this year

An annual February ritual here on Melson Ridge and elsewhere around the state is the necessary task of cleaning out bird houses in anticipation of the fast-approaching Spring nesting season. This year, this was a very sad task. Almost every bluebird house contained one or more newly-dead bluebirds.

They all froze or starved to death during last week's snow, ice, and bitter, bitter cold. You may know that bluebirds pile together into birdhouses (or other nesting cavities) to shelter from bad weather. But last week's horrible, icy, and cold onslaught was just too much for them.

My husband and I made the sad circuit of our bird houses this afternoon and found 10 dead, beautiful bluebirds.

In fact, since the snow and ice began to melt, we've seen only one, lonely male bluebird that survived. We generally see many more on any given day.

Terribly sad as this is, if you do have bird houses, it's very important to clean them out now. Help the birds that may have survived and/or may migrate into Adair County. Provide them with clean bird houses to help them recover from this bitter Winter weather.

Note: Bluebird houses are available at Day & Day Feed & Pet. They are made by Adair County native, Michael Morris, as his most welcome contribution to increasing the bluebird population in the county.

What a difference a week makes in Kentucky weather. This is the view from the Sheriff's vehicle as he responded to calls during the ice and snow storms last week. We are looking at a weekend of rain but temperatures are nowhere near freezing, so no ice in the next few days.
