LWC Football hosts Cumberlands in Top-20 matchup Friday

After the postponement of last week's contest against Georgetown (KY), the No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team is back at Blue Raider Stadium on Friday against No. 17 Cumberlands (KY) with a 2:30pmCT kickoff.

The Blue Raiders (1-0, 1-0 Mid-South Conference) easily handled Pikeville (KY) in the first game of the season with a 49-0 blowout. Lindsey Wilson outgained the Bears 343-80, a program record for the fewest yards allowed in a game.

Every quarter contained a scoring drive by the Blue Raiders. Cameron Dukes' led the team with three touchdowns and 221 yards. Terrill Cole was the main receiving threat as the sophomore caught a team-high eight passes for 125 yards and two scores.

Jaylen Boyd found success inside the red zone as the junior running back crossed the goal line twice and accumulated 33 yards. Kobe Belcher had an efficient day with 41 yards in just seven rushing attempts and the first touchdown of his career.

Defensively, Lindsey Wilson notched six sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. Darius Hylick garnered eight takedowns, the most on the team, and Ben Kalu had the most sacks at one and a half.

Cumberlands (1-1, 1-1 MSC) is coming off a two-game home stand which includes a 27-20 loss against Georgetown and a 42-12 victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) last Sunday.

The Patriots rely on a powerful rushing attack with an average of 205.5 yards per game coming on the ground, 13th-most in the NAIA. Zalon Reynolds leads all ball carriers with three touchdowns and 214 rushing yards over 25 carries. He is averaging the third-most rushing yards in the MSC with 107 per contest.

Gavin Wilkinson is the signal-caller for the Patriots. He's notched five touchdowns so far with an average of 190.5 passing yards per game. Wilkinson's favorite target has been Darius Young with the junior catching 10 passes for 165 yards and three scores over the first two matches.

Brad Montgomery is one to watch on the defensive side. The defensive lineman leads the team in tackles (15), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (1.5).

Also of note, Cumberlands averages 81 penalty yards per game, 10th-most in the nation.

Lindsey Wilson is on a four-game winning streak against Cumberlands and leads the all-time series 4-2. The higher ranked team won all six games. In the last meeting, the Blue Raiders edged out the Patriots on Nov. 16, 2019, with a 24-21 victory to claim the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division title.
